Michael Balzary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flea (born Michael Peter Balzary on October 16, 1962 in Burwood, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia) is the bassist for the alternative funk band Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Around 1971, Michael's parents divorced, and his mother moved with him and his sister Karen to Los Angeles in 1972, to live with a jazzman named Walter Urban Jr, that she would soon marry.
Balzary confessed to VH1's Behind The Music, that he originally had no interest in rock and roll and sought to become a jazz musician like his stepfather, but changed musical direction after being introduced to the music of KISS, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin by future bandmate Hillel Slovak.

Born on October 16, 1962 in Melbourne, Australia, Balzary and his family relocated to Los Angeles while he was still a youngster.
Unlike other teenagers, Michael's first musical love was jazz (instead of the expected hard rock), as he concentrated on mastering the trumpet while attending Fairfax High School.

 Flea
By this time Michael had developed jazz ambitions of his own, pounding his little heart out on the drums before falling under the influence of players like Dizzy Gillespie and moving on to the trumpet.
Success remained elusive for Anthym and in 1982 Balzary left to spend some time with the punk band Fear, but before long he was back amongst his former bandmates, earning local notoriety in bars on the Sunset Strip under the name Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem.
Shortly thereafter, Tony Flow became the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Balzary became "Flea", and both together became another cog in the huge, mindless wheel of EMI Records.

Chili Peppers spawned a slew of imitators in their wake, but still managed to be the leaders of the pack by the dawn of the 21st century.
It was during this time that the quartet honed their sound and live act (as they stumbled across a stage gimmick that would soon become their trademark -- performing on stage completely naked, except for a tube sock covering a certain part of their anatomy).
By 1983, Balzary had begun to go by the name "Flea," and the group changed their name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Peppers' own pasts are as varied as their muse's is checkered; indeed, founding band members Kiedis and Balzary seem to have been born strange.
Kiedis was 11 when he moved to Hollywood from his mother's home in Michigan to be with his divorced father, actor Blackie Dammett.
Marginally calmer lives, and wider commercial acceptance, came only after the 1988 death by heroin overdose of Frusciante's predecessor, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and the subsequent departure of drummer Jack Irons, who was replaced last year by Smith.

In fact, the 'copy cat' syndrome got so out of hand that Flea refused to use his popular 'slap' technique for the Peppers' massive 1991 hit Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Since this makes the bass take up a large part of the aural spectrum, it is mostly used by bass players who act as the lead in their music.
Notable examples are Stuart Hamm, whose music is Metal-oriented, and Michael Manring, who has a more jazzy / new age style.
Bass players like Chris Squire, Michael Balzary (a.k.a Flea) and John Entwistle have been revolutionary by taking a more important, leading, complicated role and making the instrument a more important and recognised one, a trend that caught on in bands that followed them.

Anthony Kiedis (for some unknown bloody reason) used to sing Michael a song that went "Flea fly floo, flea fly floo!" (or soemthing to that effect), and it somehow stuck.
