BBC - Comedy Guide - Michael Bentine's Potty Time
Described by Bentine as 'Mark Two Bumblies', the Pottys embraced the surreal comic's fascination for and with puppets, resulting in 78 truly delightful programmes of entertainment aimed primarily at younger viewers but enjoyed by any adults who happened - whether by misfortune or design - to be around in the daytime.
They were virtually faceless too, Bentine recognising that, without features, his characters would be free from prejudice since they could be any colour, any nationality, any religion and any age.
One episode showed the Pottys playing 'drats', described by Bentine as one of Britain's ancient indoor sports, which, with humans in the roles, had been among the highlights of It's A Square World.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Mike, Phil And Albert   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The event owed as much to the heritage of Spike Jones as it did to Bentine's own brand of lunacy, with guns, a pram, a tea-trolley, ping-pong balls and a submarine used along with the more traditional orchestral elements to interpret the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and other composers.
Along the way Bentine described how Prince Albert had designed the famous hall as the world's largest gasometer, and a fanciful centrepiece had Albert and Queen Victoria duetting on such well-known pieces as 'Tit Willow' and 'The Last Rose Of Summer'.
Although undoubtedly funny, the event was tinged with a bitter-sweet edge: Bentine conceived the show as a tribute to his son Stuart, who had been killed the previous year in a light aircraft crash.

The Sandwich Man (1966)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
What marks this day out from the usual routine is that Horace, a pigeon fancier, has a bird due home from a race; hopes and fears for her fuel his peregrinations.
Michael Bentine is one of the less famous Goons, and there is very little of their absurdist aesthetic here, although a sequence involving a drunken stockbroker running amok in Hyde Park points towards Monty Python.
This film is less a comedy than an anthology of comedy - each new character Horace meets represents a different kind of comedy, be it verbal, situation, slapstick, farce etc. (perhaps mirroring 'Ulysses'' mode of narration).

Bumbly Two was the fattest and most jovial of the trio, and Bumbly Three was the dim one, who always got things wrong (and was similar to the Eccles character which Michael had already made famous in The Goons).
In the course of the series Michael played Pirates with them, using a large pirate ship, which they conjured out of thin air by a thought process using their invention, the Bumblescope.
They also played Cowboys and Indians, with costumes and props conjured up by the same process, and they followed this by playing King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, with jousting Bumblies riding on roller skates.

In 1952, the four original stars of "The Goon Show" (Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine) were recruited to appear in a movie.
Michael Bentine would later recall that director Maclean Rogers would only allow one take per scene, and the threat of wrecking the budget with a blown line or awkward sight gag may explain why these wacky radio comics often seemed so subdued on camera.
Bentine left the Goons shortly after this film was completed and the level of his participation has never been fully appreciated because the majority of the radio episodes featuring him are believed to be lost.
