Bernays possessed wide philosophical views, a rare knowledge of the Bible, Midrash, and Talmud, and an admirable flow of language: he was indeed a born orator.
His antagonists were therefore to be found in the ranks of the ascetic fanatics of the "klaus" as well as among the adherents of the "Temple," a reform synagogue founded in 1819, against whose prayer-book Bernays had pronounced an anathema.
Of his sons the celebrated philologist Jacob Bernays, professor and chief librarian at the University of Bonn, kept faithful to the religious views of his father, while the well-known literary historian Michael Bernays, who was only fourteen years old on his father's death, was converted to Christianity.

In 1859 Bernays published a festival play for the one hundredth anniversary of Schiller's birthday, and in 1864 he composed verses on the tricentennial celebration of the birth of Shakespeare.
Shortly after the Franco-Prussian war, which so powerfully stimulated the general interest in the national poetry, Bernays received a call to the University of Leipsic, and such was his popularity as a lecturer there that within a very short time after his arrival the largest hall of the university was inadequate to accommodate the audience.
In his published works Bernays aimed to transfer the methods of classical philology to the domain of modern literary history and criticism, and endeavored to elevate these studies to an equality with the other academic sciences.

The nephew of Sigmund Freud, Bernays brought an astute grasp of human behavior to the nascent field of public relations, opening his own PR firm in 1919 and launching celebrated publicity campaigns for American Tobacco, Ivory Soap, United Fruit, book publishers, manufacturers of eggs and bacon and the platforms of presidents from Coolidge to Eisenhower.
While it is true Bernays could not have fully appreciated all the consequences, his relentless drive to serve his clients reveals a man who forgot that public relations means being the conduit between the public and the client, not being another salesman, no matter how clever.
Bernays was a nephew of Sigmund Freud and much of his business was based on appealing to peoples psychology.

Bernays was 93 when we talked and full of memories of famous clients ranging from tobacco industry poobahs (he convinced women to embrace smoking as an expression of their liberation) to Eleanor Roosevelt.
Bernays said he had no belief in God but a strong faith in what he had declared openly six decades before: "The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society.
Bernays saw Judaism and Christianity as potent lies that had to be fought by PR folks such as himself who would "make the public believe that human gods are watching over us." Today, those "human gods" are the scientific establishment.

Bernays also realized the importance of Gödel's results immediately after he studied Gödel's paper in January 1931, writing to Gödel that (under the assumption that finitary reasoning can be formalized in Principia) the incompleteness theorem show that a finitary consistency proof of Principia is impossible.
Hilbert and Bernays (1934) give the only general account of finitary contentual number theory; according to it, operations defined by primitive recursion and proofs using induction are finitarily acceptable.
Bernays (1922, 216) suggests that in finitary mathematics, only "primitive intuitive cognitions come into play," and uses the term "point of view of intuitive evidence" in connection with finitism 1930, 250.

During a study of the caterpillars of two types of tiger moths, known as Grammia geneura and Estigmene acrea, Singer and Bernays observed that when the caterpillars were besieged by potentially deadly parasites, they underwent a chemical change that affected their taste sensing cells.
Singer and Bernays noted that the taste for these medicinal components was heightened in the infected caterpillars while remaining unchanged in uninfected caterpillars.

Some of Bernays' terminology may have been ill-conceived and critic-provoking, but his underlying ideas were, and still are, very sound.
Another recurring and intensifying theme is Bernays' assertion that public relations should be made into a legally defined and sanctioned profession similar to law and medicine.
He uses Bernays concept of public relations as the "engineering of consent" and voices serious concerns about the extent of the engineering to which we're subjected.

Bernay's is presented as a genius and a demon and the facts support that he was both!
But considering the impact Bernay's ideas and work made on PR and spin and consequently the American way of life, I found the writing style to be rather flippant; and the book, as a whole, skimpy.

Naturally, all this screwing around and concomitant secret-keeping led to a rather complicated and comical scene when the two men sailed together to America in 1909 and conducted mutual dream analyses.
Jung lucked out here, as Spielrein had written to Freud, telling him of her romance with Jung, only Freud had fallen for Jung’s explanation that Spielrein was emotionally disturbed.
