BBC - Radio 3 Jazz Profiles - Michael Brecker
Brecker is the most influential saxophonist in the post Coltrane tradition, and his rapid execution, constant flow of ideas and rhythmic momentum have been widely admired and imitated.
He is also one of the most prolifically recorded saxophonists in jazz, as he has worked in a vast range of studio settings as well as with his own groups and the fusion band led with his trumpeter brother Randy (born 1945).
Michael also worked in the late 1970s band Steps (which later became Steps Ahead), but in due course he began to focus more of fronting his own groups, and mainly a quartet with piano, bass and drums that allowed his torrent of ideas free rein.

Purists might have considered Brecker's reputation sullied by his association with fusion--especially as performed in the 1970s by the Brecker Brothers, which featured him alongside his brother Randy on trumpet, and later by Steps Ahead--but since the mid-1980s, the tenorist has been on a post-bop roll.
Brecker is a very powerful tenor player here as always; like Coltrane and Dexter Gordon one has the feeling he could just go on soloing forever.
Mr Brecker has been, and will continue to be, a productive and influential artist in the field of jazz so I suppose we ought to allow him the odd lack lustre performace but this by no means dampens the disappointment.

What won critical acclaim and gives their Live at Massey Hall recording such emotional vibrancy is that the musicians trusted their talents to re-imagine some of the best-known works of these late legends in the spirit of adventure and exploration that characterized their art.
For Hancock, some of the inspiration for this album came from personal experience, as he was, of course, the key man on keyboards for Davis, for five crucial years in the development of jazz, in a band that included Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.
Among the originals written for the tour was Michael Brecker's dedication to Coltrane, "D Trane." "I thought it was a composition that echoes Coltrane and Miles, while also being a fun vehicle to blow on," Brecker says.
