Capellas left HP Monday, accompanied by a statement from HP CEO Carly Fiorina that "we've reached a natural transition point." But investors sent shares of the computer maker 11 percent lower amid concerns over Fiorina's direction for the company without him present.
Capellas told reporters that he continues to have a good relationship with Fiorina and that he was not unhappy being the No. 2 executive at the combined company, but he had wanted to again be CEO at some point in his career.

For Michael D. Capellas, the 46-year-old chief executive of Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), it came when he was an eighth-grader in the gritty mill town of Warren, Ohio.
Even though the younger Capellas was not particularly big or fast--or a natural athlete--he not only became a linebacker but as co-captain of the Warren G. Harding High School football team, he also led his buddies to the Ohio state championship and was honored as a state all-star in 1971.

From 1981 to 1996, Capellas held several senior positions at Schlumberger, Ltd., including serving as the company's first corporate director for information systems; controller and treasurer of Schlumberger's operations in Asia Pacific; CFO of Dowell Schlumberger, Inc., a joint venture between Schlumberger and Dow Chemical; and in operations management at Schlumberger's Fairchild Semiconductor unit.
Capellas began his career at Republic Steel Corporation (1976-81), where he held various systems analyst and manufacturing positions.
