Michael Cimino - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael Cimino (born February 3, 1939 in New York City, New York) is an American film director.
Cimino's biography is an example of one of the meteoric rises and falls that were seen in Hollywood in the 1970s.
Interviews with Cimino are rare, and his part in the Heaven's Gate saga remains a relative non-topic, though George Hickenlooper's book Reel Interviews and Peter Biskind's scathing book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, touch almost exclusively on the film and resulting scandal, where Hickenlooper's book offers a rare candid discussion with Cimino, Biskind's does not.

Michael is forced to try again and he takes the gun and shoots the Vietnamese leader in the forehead and he and Nick grab the guns from other soldiers and kill them, rescue Steven from the bamboo cage and try to escape by floating down the river on a log.
Michael, however, does find Linda and they have an emotional reunion that is notable for her confused and vulnerable emotion state in which she wishes to comfort Michael while she still ponders what has happened to Nick, who has disappeared and not returned.
Michael and Linda presumably go on to a passionate life together and Steven appears ready to accept his fate and live with his wife, and the rest of the friends presumably live out their lives sadly but with some pride that their country was served by their friends.

Cimino?s next credit as a screenwriter would prove to be the beginning of a short but fruitful association with Clint Eastwood.
Cimino was quiet for three years until 1990, when he took the hired-gun studio job of directing a remake of the crime classic Desperate Hours, once again reteaming with Mickey Rourke.
Cimino?s screenplay is so focused on detail and nuance rather than plot that it?s a chore to figure out what the hell is going on half the time.

Michael, who was best prepared for the ordeal due to his hunting skills, personal philosophy of "one shot - one kill" and charisma of natural leader, looks unaffected on the surface and actually tries to bring back some normalcy to the lives of his comrades and community.

The last 20 minutes or so of Michael Cimino's "Sunchaser" contain some passages of great beauty, reminding you that this is indeed the director who fashioned the masterful "The Deer Hunter" nearly 20 years ago, before his career took one of the most notorious downward spirals in Hollywood history.

The core characters in Cimino’s film are among the most vivid, lifelike characterizations I’ve ever seen in the movies, and they are established through extensive scenes dealing with their normal daily lives and interactions with each other.
In the start of the film, Michael is shown to be a bit of a tough guy, with a temper that sometimes gets out of hand, but after he returns from the ‘nam, his excesses are even more pronounced, and dangerous.
Cimino’s vision of how war changes the personalities of these characters, particularly those who were actually in the conflict, is stunning.

village voice > film > Heaven's Gate by Michael Atkinson
It was inevitable that Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate would ring the death knell, in 1980, for what has since been called the American new wave—that gustiest of zeitgeists was too indulgent of individualism, too grown-up, and too contemptuous of base consumer capitalism to survive.
Cimino was the moment's Von Stroheim, too successful for the wrong reasons at first and then so outrageously profligate that his public lynching was a ritual the Industry had to perform in order to reassert mindless Lucasian profit as its god.
The lie of frontier idealism is debunked, and Vilmos Zsigmond's mistily gorgeous cinematography is virtually an act of mourning in and of itself.
