Sir Michael Andrew Agnus Costa - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
SIR MICHAEL ANDREW AGNUS COSTA (1808-1884), British musical conductor and composer, the son of Cavaliere Pasquale Costa, a Spaniard, was born at Naples on the 14th of February 1808.
He conducted the opera at Her Majesty's from 1832 till 5846, when he seceded to the Italian Opera at Covent Garden; he was conductor of the Philharmonic Society from 1846 to 1854, of the Sacred Harmonic Society from 1848, and of the Birmingham festival from 1849.
Costa was the great conductor of his day, but both his musical and his human sympathies were somewhat limited; his compositions have passed into oblivion, with the exception of the least admirable of them - his arrangement of the national anthem.

Costa Rican President Teodoro Picado of the National Republican Party, realizing that defeat was inevitable, sent notice to Figueres that he was willing to come to a compromise; Picado did not want to be held responsible for what could turn into a long, bloody civil war.
Costa Rica, once a country full of governmental fraud and corruption, became a respectable democracy of the West and a proud ally of the United States, as well as a model for other Latin American countries in how to properly establish democracy and successfully revitalize the economy.
All this political commotion within Costa Rica was noticed by US officials, and with the constant accusations made against the government about their Communist ties by Figueres and the opposition, the US was, in many ways, duped into concluding that the political unrest of its neighbor-friend Costa Rica was due to Communist infiltration.
