ZNet | Activism | Stop the press!
In late August, Jewish Federal Labor MP Michael Danby wrote a letter to the Australian Jewish News (AJN) and demanded MUP “should drop this whole disgusting project.” He claimed that MUP head, Louise Adler, had made comments about Israel and himself that were plainly false.
A few days later, Danby responded to Crikey, denied he had called for censorship and labeled my views on Israel “disgusting.” He cautioned MUP - at a time when Israel was “making a painful withdrawal from Gaza…and when the prospects for peace are improving” – against publishing books that he thought inappropriate for the times.
Danby and numerous pro-Israel supporters are clearly confronted by me posing questions about Australia’s pro-Israel media, the Howard government’s relationship with Israel and America, the role of the pro-Israel lobby, America’s relationship with the Jewish state, my experiences in the Middle East, including through the Palestinian occupied territories and Jewish and Arab voices of dissent.

Lane’s attack on Michael Danby’s integrity has to be understood within the context of a long story.
Danby pointed out that a dislike of all things American was a constant theme through all Lane’s public utterances.
Danby wrote, "I don’t dispute Terry Lane’s right to make these personal judgements and no one has accused the poor man of treason for his unproductive and virulent opposition to the just and subsequently vindicated attempt to deter Saddam Hussein.

The politician is Labor's Michael Danby, MP for the marginal inner-city seat of Melbourne Ports, with its big Jewish vote, and unarguably the Australian Parliament's most unambiguous and insidious defender of the Israeli Government.
Danby's Sydney colleague, Julia Irwin, who has one of the safest Labor seats in the country, thinks Danby is a "bully".
Danby kept asserting that the motion was "inflammatory" and "divisive".

Danby urges boycott of Jewish book - Carbone & Money - Opinion - theage.com.au
MEDDLER for Melbourne Ports Michael Danby championed the cause of asylum seekers in June when he declared: "They have the right of free speech." But a few months on, the Jewish Labor MP is selective about civil liberties, given he wants to muzzle Antony Loewenstein, the author of a book on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Adler told Diary she was puzzled that Danby's letter contained quotes from her, given she hadn't had a "conversation of substance" with him before their 1972 graduation or since.
Loewenstein is similarly bewildered because he approached Danby last year to contribute to the book and was told the MP would answer some questions, only to find out early this year that he would no longer take part.
