Durant is a native of Berlin, New Hampshire, and served in the United States Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Night Stalkers) as a Chief Warrant Officer 3.

Durant went down with the Black Hawk he piloted; after a terrifying crash in which his back and leg were broken and a violent fire-fight, he was held captive for ten days by Somali militiamen as a pawn in their stand-off with American peacekeeping forces.
Durant is a gung-ho army honcho, not much given to introspection, and the book often takes leave of the captivity narrative to recount his exploits in conflicts from Panama to Iraq, and to celebrate the bravado and leave-no-man-behind esprit-de-corps of his élite "Night Stalkers" helicopter unit.
Durant tells how rightfully disappointed he and his team were that they were refused permission to finish their mission for which 17 lives were lost in Somalia.

According to out-law.com in a major article, Michael Durant has given up his petition to the House of Lords against the UK Court of Appeal's narrowing the definition of personal data under the UK Data Protection Act to something very narrow indeed in the case of paper filing systems.
The Durant Case, as it has become known, has taken the view that a paper based filing system in most cases is not a "Relevant Filing System" under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998.
The UK Information Commissioner goes on to summarise the case in a seven page document, and to give guidelines about the interpretation of this rather awkward difference between the UK and the rest of the European Economic Area.
