 TV Land - Good Times
Good Times follows the challenges and joys of the close-knit Evans family--patriarch James, mother Florida, eldest son and accomplished amateur painter J.J. (James Evans, Jr.), brainy and beautiful daughter Thelma, and youngest son Michael, a political and social activist--who live together in a high-rise housing project on the South Side of Chicago.
With ratings in decline, Good Times was pulled from the CBS schedule, and the last original episode aired on August 1, 1979.
In a television landscape populated almost exclusively by prosperous white characters living in idealized settings, and where black families were always presented as somehow broken or fractured, Good Times was the first prime-time series that featured a strong black man at the head of a close-knit lower-middle-class black family.

 Good Times
Good Times was initially successful in that it offered solace for both blacks and whites, who could identify with the difficulties the Evans family faced.
Good Times was also noteworthy in its portrayal of an African-American family attempting to negotiate the vicissitudes of life in a high-rise tenement apartment in an urban slum--the first show to tackle such a scenario with any measure of realism.
Good Times, with its success and its criticism remains an important program in television history.

Good Times: First Season PopMatters Television Review
Created by Eric Monte and Michael Evans, Good Times was a spin-off of Maude, which was in turn spun off of All in the Family (both also Lear creations).
When Florida Evans (Esther Rolle) leaves Maude's employ as housekeeper, and relocates to Chicago, the intelligent and quick-witted maid is transformed into a more subdued, maternal stay-at-home mom.
Rolle was even more outspoken about the producers' decision to focus on the buffoonish J.J., whose "Dyn-o-mite" was being emulated by the black youth of America.

Photography : Art Form of the Sacred Cow
In yesterday's New York Times two longish articles on photography shows at the Puffin Room and at Matthew Marks Gallery followed a very long article on Steichen by the ever-unctuous Michael Kimmelman, and of the nine short reviews two were devoted to photography, the late Dr. Tasker, and the polaroids of Walker Evans.
Photography was supposed to be "better" than painting (though not as good as film) because it held the possibility of political action.
Photography as an art form has degenerated into an evasion of standards, even within its own context.
