Colin Michael Foale PhD CBE (born 6 January 1957) is a British-born astronaut with dual UK-US citizenship; he is a veteran of four space shuttle missions and extended stays on both Mir and the International Space Station.
Born in Louth and raised in Cambridge, Foale was educated at The King's School, Canterbury and Queens' College, Cambridge University, receiving a doctorate in laboratory astrophysics in 1982.
Foale joined the mission operations division of NASA in 1983 and was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1987.

Michael told us of his long term interest in space travel from boyhood days, but, as always in life, it was a set of odd circumstances that finally led to him becoming an astronaut.

NASA astronaut Michael Foale and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Kaleri celebrated New Year's Day on the space station, then were notified Monday that the air pressure was slowly dropping.
Foale spent what was supposed to be a day off rechecking suspected areas in the U.S. modules with a device that listens for the ultrasound shriek of escaping air.
Detailed plans had been drawn up to close the main hatches between the large modules on Wednesday, and have Foale and Kaleri retreat to the Russian-made service module for four or five days while pressure readings were watched in all the different modules.
