In America, Both Types of Drug Addiction Come at a High Price
Michael Gawenda is a former editor and editor-in-chief of The Age, and a former editor of TIME South Pacific.
Gawenda said reporting gave him everything he hoped it would - access to interesting people, travel, the ability to reach readers and have a dialogue with them, and the chance to be an eyewitness to important events.
Gawenda entertained the idea of becoming a senior editor for TIME and moving permanently to New York, but in the end he wanted to be an Australian journalist working for Australian papers.

On several occasions throughout his career, Gawenda was criticised for not presenting a balanced view on the Arab-Israeli conflict, instead possessing an inherent anti-Israel bias by several Australian Jewish organizations.
Gawenda denied the claim on several occasions, but was forced to make a formal apology after a threat of legal action.

I have only looked after Michael for the past year and a half and he was taking Prozac 20 to 40 mgs when he first registered with us, so I am not sure of the original indication for treatment.
Michael had stated to the members of his band and management that he did not want to be on that last tour.
One fan wrote into U.S. Magazine after Michael died and said that she had attended the last show on the east coast and could not understand how those around him did not see this coming, it was obvious even to the audience that he was in bad shape.

Media bats for Dems to blame the GOP for Abramoff
Michael Gawenda, Washington correspondent for the Melbourne Age had no trouble calling it a Republican scandal while basically ignoring those Dems who were also on the take (Blatant and brazen, that’s Jack Abramoff, 7 January 2006).
What Gawenda deliberately omitted was that DeLay’s so-called K Street project was no different from what the Democrats have been doing for decades, and that is screening lobbyists on the basis of party support.
Gawenda approvingly turned to McCain “who has been pushing for reform of lobbying rules for five years”, overlooking the fact that his campaign finance reforms not only violated the constitution they also contributed mightily to the corruption of the political process through the use of the 527 loophole that the likes of Soros ruthlessly exploited.

The other 11 million Cubans are written out of the story, or appear as passive victims of a megalomaniac dictator chasing a socialist utopian fantasy that all sensible people gave up on years ago.
Gawenda made no mention of the revolution’s impressive social gains — which might go some way to explaining how the revolutionary government Castro has headed for 47 years has survived the numerous attempts of its powerful northern neighbour to destroy it.
Gawenda parrots Washington’s claim that it is working to “help the Cuban people in the transition to genuine democracy”.

Age editor Michael Gawenda labelled me "contemptible" yesterday for commenting on his Media Watch exposed censorship of a hard-hitting Leunig cartoon on the Middle East and pointing out that he is Jewish.
