King Crimson - Biography - AOL Music
Michael Giles (drums, vocals), Peter Giles (bass, vocals), and Robert Fripp (guitar) had begun working together in late 1967, after playing in a variety of bands.
Michael Giles (born 1942, Bournemouth, Dorset, England) and Peter Giles had played with bandleader/brothers Dave and Gordon Dowland in a group called the Dowland Brothers from 1962 until 1964.
Bassist Peter Giles, however, wasn't happy with the direction in which the new group was moving -- Fripp left open the possibility that either he or Peter Giles could be replaced by Fripp's boyhood friend Greg Lake, who was proficient on both bass and guitar, at the decision of Michael Giles and Ian McDonald.

 Michael Giles
Michael Giles had his first professional gig in 1964 with Trendsetters, Ltd., later moving on with his brother Peter Giles to become Robert Fripp's partner in obscurity as a member of Giles, Giles and Fripp in 1967.
This of course led to the first incarnation of the mighty King Crimson, but almost as soon as the band was underway it was falling apart, with Giles and Crimson multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald turning in their notice and recording the much less aggressive McDonald and Giles in 1970.
In 2002 Giles joined with McDonald and his brother Peter, as well as former Crimson wind player Mel Collins, to form 21st Century Schizoid Band, a band primarily focused on rehashing songs from the early stages of King Crimson; he was replaced in 2003 by fellow KC ex-drummer Ian Wallace.

One of their signings was Giles, Giles and Fripp, who began cutting their single "One in a Million" and a follow-up album, The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp, during the summer of 1968.
In retrospect, Giles, Giles and Fripp's sound was too precious for words, with pop choruses (with a strange "French" feeling to the arrangements, in some people's ears) and jazzy guitar juxtaposed alongside odds songs and narrative tales.
At around this time of decision, Giles, Giles and Fripp ceased to exist, after having sold a total of 600 copies of their album.

Borrn in 1942 in Winton, Dorset, England, the elder of two sons, Michael Giles started playing professionally at age 22 as a member of the Trendsetters Ltd. with his younger brother Peter Giles, who played bass.
Giles, Giles & Fripp never caught on commercially and, indeed, their album was for many years one of the poorest selling in the whole Deram catalog, but they went through some personnel changes, added Ian McDonald and, for a time, folksinger Julie Dyble, losing Peter Giles along the way, and evolved into King Crimson.
Giles worked on a solo album in the late 1970's that never saw the light of day, and he generally worked his quiet way behind the music scenes -- his most visible project was Ghost Dance, cut in partnership with slightly later Crimson member Jamie Muir.

MCDONALD & GILES McDonald & Giles review by bristolstc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
You obviously would know Ian McDonald and Michael Giles were in the formative period King Crimson who recorded what goes without saying one of the greatest progressive rock albums ever In The Court Of The Crimson King.
MacDonald and Giles with help from their musical friends came up with an album of beautiful soothing music that is at times closer to Caravan than Crimson, but often reminiscent of The Beatles around the Abbey Road period.
One final note I would add, Giles plays some remarkable drums here and I actually prefer McDonald's sax breaks on this album to the noisier ones on "21st Century Schizoid Man," but if you like melodic and gentle music AND King Crimson this album should be in your collection.

Side one of the original LP closed with Michael Giles' composition, "Tomorrow's People -- The Children of Today." It is on this track that Blakesley contributes his multitracked trombone, giving the piece a brassier sound.
Giles had started the piece in 1967, undoubtedly for Giles, Giles and Fripp, but completed it in 1970, post-Crimson.

Giles is the most "European" of the three in his drumming sensibilities, and the most poorly represented on cds.
