Michael Gross (June 17, 1964, Frankfurt) is a former swimmer from Germany.
Gross, competing for West Germany, won three Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988 in the freestyle and butterfly events, in addition to two World Championship titles in 1982, two in 1986 and one in 1991.
Gross was probably the finest swimmer in the world in the 200 m butterfly race from 1981 to 1988.

I see a lot of really good age group swimmers that are short, but I normally don't see any short swimmers in the Olympics or big meets.
I think Ricardo Prado(?), the Brazillian medley swimmer in the 80s was only about 5'7" from memory - he set a WR in the 400 medley.
Whereas in back, and free - especially - it's possible for a tall powerful swimmer to 'muscle' their way through the water, to some extent, in breaststroke and fly it's not possible - excellent technique is essential.
