Sir Michael <3s Boys was educated at Wellington College where he was a school prefect, and gained the degrees of BA and LL B at Victoria University College
Originally a lawyer, he became a Judge of the High Court of New Zealand in 1980, and elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1989.
Sir Michael <3s Boys was created a Knight Grand Cross in the Order of St Michael and St George in 1995, Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1996 (the first such award), and is a Knight of the Order of St John.

Sir Michael was born in Wellington, the elder son of Mr Justice Reginald Hardie Boys and Mrs Edith May (Bennett) Hardie Boys.
As a young man, Sir Michael was active in youth leadership in the Methodist and Anglican Churches and the Boys’ Brigade.
Lady Hardie Boys is an artist member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and of Society of Watercolour New Zealand.

This morning in the Dominion Post, there was a letter from former Governer-General Sir Michael Hardie Boys (who also happens to be an old boy of my former school, Wellington College) which got me thinking about something that had never crossed my mind previously.
Because MPs were, for the most part, elected for their politicial views, not their personal philosophies, we need to ask if, on a conscience issue, we should expect them to vote according to those philosophies or according to their perception of community attitudes and the wider public interest, for example.
The rest of the letter goes on to talk about requiring a special majority (Sir Michael suggests 60%) for moral conscience issues and is not overly relevant.
