  Michael Harrington Summary
Michael Harrington was born into a middle class family and educated at Holy Cross College (A.B., 1947), Yale Law School, and the University of Chicago (M.A., 1949).
Michael Harrington was working on his final book and carrying a full load of academic and public lectures when he died of cancer in 1989.
Harrington and Shachtman believed that socialism, the promise of a just and fully democratic society, could not be realized under authoritarian Communism and they were both fiercely critical of the "bureaucratic collectivist" states in Eastern Europe and elsewhere.

Conversation with an Atheist -- Michael Harrington on Religion and Socialism
Harrington was nurtured in pre-Vatican II Roman Catholicism; after attending a Jesuit high school in St. Louis and later Holy Cross College in the east, he joined the Catholic Worker Movement, that odd combination of anarchy and radical obedience.
Harrington is the national chairman of the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (DSOC, pronounced Dee-Sock), the strategy of which has been to build a socialist presence on the left wing of the Democratic Party.
Harrington, who understands better than many Christians the meaning of a culture’s decay, actively seeks the aid of the faithful, whose ultimate loyalty cannot be to the movement or even to the world which that movement seeks to transform.

Michael Harrington: Socialist to the End
Harrington later described his comrades as "determined but unhysterical anticommunists engaged in seemingly Talmudic exegeses of the holy writ according to Karl Marx." From Shachtman he inherited his signature theories of democratic Marxism and bureaucratic collectivism, as well as his socialist outrage at the communist perversion of socialism.
Harrington had been the youngest member of his high school class, his college class, his drinking gangs and his socialist sects; now he confronted younger student leaders who rejected his counsel, and he did not take it well.
Harrington used statistics from the Federal Reserve Board and the U.S. Commerce Department to argue that there were 50 million poor people in the affluent society; as an aid to understanding how this could be trne in 1959, he appropriated the "culture of poverty" thesis of anthropologist Oscar Lewis.

Michael Harrington (1928-89), easily the most prominent non-Stalinist American Marxist of the post-World War II era, achieved his fame with The Other America in 1962.
Catherine Harrington gave birth to her first and only child in St. Louis Maternity Hospital at 5:10 P.M. on the cold and cloudy afternoon of February 24, 1928.
According to Isserman, it was inevitable for Harrington to act on his own antipathy to the gross materialism that surrounded him, and to extend this distaste for those living in luxury amid the squalor that surrounded them to his own philosophy and politics.
