Michael IX was the eldest son of Andronikos II Palaiologos and Anna of Hungary, a daughter of King Stephen V of Hungary.
Michael IX Palaiologos was acclaimed co-emperor in 1281 and was crowned in 1294 or 1295.
Michael IX Palaiologos married Rita of Armenia (renamed Maria, later nun Xene), daughter of King Leo III of Armenia and Queen Keran of Armenia in 1296.

Same thing with the Palaeologus, I made some of them pathetic during the time (1300's) when the Empire basically lost all of west Asia Minor, then lost all of their lower balkan provinces except Constantinople, Thessalonika and Morea.
Our primary sources are Michael Psellus and Anna Comnena, neither of whom are unbiased, but they're a better place to start than most.
The reason Michael Psellus is so kind and laudatory to Michael whatever (the emperor) is because he had tutored him since the future emperor was a child, and considered him the embodiment of all his philosophical ideals, despite the fact that he was pretty much worthless in every sense.
