  The Flaming Lips
Michael Ivins was born in Omaha, Nebraska during 1963.
Michael's stony silences and sunglasses were initially particularly unsettling for Steven Drozd, who joined the band in 1992, "The first month and a half I was in the band, I didn't hear him say anything." The two later became roommates on tours, sharing as they did a love of cigarettes.
Michael got married in 1998, to Catherine, and is these days the proud owner of, amongst other things, innumerable sci-fi geek electronic gadgets, a cat named Tarkus and several model tanks.

With Coyne’s brother Mark singing lead vocals and Michael Ivins on bass guitar, the band debuted at a transvestite bar.
Drozd’s arm was almost needlessly amputated due to what he claimed was a spider bite (it turned out to be abcessed as a result of Drozd's heroin use) and Ivins was trapped in his car for several hours, after the wheel spun off of another vehicle, into his windshield.
The departure of Jones and a general dissatisfaction with standard "rock" music led to the three remaining members of the group to redefine the direction of the band with the experimental Zaireeka (1997), a four-CD album which is intended to be heard by playing all four CDs in four separate CD players simultaneously.

After progressing through an endless string of drummers for nearly 10 years (during which time Mark Coyne left the band to start a family of his own), Wayne and Michael finally settled on multi-instrumentalist Steven Drodz to fill the role of percussionist/keyboardist in '93, prior to the release of "Transmissions" from the Satellite Heart.
