Series creator and former host Joel Hodgson reportedly chose Nelson to be his replacement because he thought Nelson was a natural leader, a gifted comedian as well as a gifted musician and also that Nelson simply looked good standing next to the show's puppets.
Nelson was the head writer of the cult television series Mystery Science Theater 3000 for most of the show's 11-year run, and spent half of that time playing the on-air host, Mike Nelson.
Nelson is a talented comedic actor who can portray both male and female characters, and known for his goofy charm and classically Midwestern appearance (being tall, broad-shouldered and blond).

Nelson clearly had a lot more fun with the various villains and comic foils, most especailly rival author Gus Bromstad (think Garrison Kiellor, but sociopathic), Minnesotta Govenor Bart Herzog (Jesse Ventura cross-bred with Schwarzenegger) and funk mogul King Leo (a thoroughly accurate portrayal of Prince).
Nelson's non-fiction work (and his work on MST3K) his humor and wit are presented unadulterated.
Nelson again takes the oppotunity to muse with affection on the inscrutable Danish people and the various quirks of the Minnesotans who surround him.

While listening to the radio on an errand yesterday, I was delighted to hear that Mike Nelson was performing at ShadowBox Cabaret, a local “comedy and rock-and-roll” venue!
It’s now often hard for me to watch a movie that doesn’t totally captivate me without interjecting puns or highlighting major plot deficiencies.

Forgot to mention something very cool from the weekend: spoke with Michael J. Nelson of MST3K fame; he was on the Northern Alliance show, and as much as I would have loved to elbow my way into the studio I have some small scraps of decency left, so I just called the show.
Pleasure to speak with the man. The MST3K cast was probably the smartest group of comic writers (and actors) the medium has seen since the kinetoscope days.
My wife did fine that year, but later she wiped out and landed on the one part of body not shielded by high-impact plastic.
