In my opinion, althought the Champions Cup is the showcase event, the UEFA Cup is the real test of a league's strength, and Italian teams have dominated this cup in the past years to a level that ought to have been acutely embarrasing to other leagues.
Despite those matches when a team rose to the occasion and played to their famed best, by and large Italian teams have been finding it hard to show consistency of play, 90 minutes of determination, equal technical skills, and willingness to chase a result that is slipping away from them.
Not because they are the best footballers but because many of them come from the youth system, and therefore know each other off by heart when playing with each other on the pitch.
