Michael Kamen (April 15, 1948 – November 18, 2003) was an American composer (especially of film scores), orchestral arranger, orchestral conductor, song writer, and session musician.
Kamen was born in New York City, USA and studied at the High School of Music and Art in New York (now Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts), then at Juilliard's School for Music Dance and Drama in New York, where he learned to play the oboe.
Kamen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1997, although he reportedly died from a heart attack.

When it was first announced the Michael Kamen would be brought on as the composer for this HBO mini-series, reactions were mixed.
From the early to mid-Nineties, Michael Kamen established that he had the heroic to the tender well within in his composing-range, but as the century closed a stand-out effort from Kamen became scarce.
Kamen should draw some praise for being able to compose his way out of John Williams foreboding-WWII-shadow and firmly placing his own stamp upon this mini-series that promises to actually be worth viewing.

Michael Kamen, the Oscar-nominated composer and conductor, has died of a heart attack, brought on by complications of multiple sclerosis, at his home in London, on 18 November 2003.
As recently as the summer of 2002, Kamen led the orchestra during Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace in London, and was scheduled to score the Forest Whitaker-directed comedy "First Daughter" in early 2004.
In 2003, Kamen revealed that he was suffering from multiple sclerosis, and that he was planning to be involved in a new charity set up to combat the disease.

Michael Kamen only got round to producing one compilation of his music during his lifetime and he later wrote plenty of great scores that are sadly omitted here.
Despite proclaiming "powerful new orchestrations, specially written for this album" I must admit that they are hard to spot at times and in any case, few of the tracks seem to have been arranged for the concert hall in mind.
Still, I think Kamen was attempting to take his duties seriously and so only more adult entries are included, but the performances are good and the track by track liner notes interesting.

The majority of the score features a background layer of these electronic whooshes and grinds, and although their dark and sinister nature is the key to the score, they don't carry the music in and of themselves.
