Translations of his works are difficult; Michael Kandel's translations into English have been generally praised as capturing the spirit of the original.
Lem was born in 1921 in Lwów, Poland (now Ukraine), the son of Sabina Woller and Samuel Lem, a physician in the Austro-Hungarian army.

Michael Skeet's "Shelf Life" opens Tesseracts 7 with a suitably unsettling note of distorted identity, a theme that reappears often in this anthology series.

 The Cyberiad: Fables for the Cybernetic Age / Stanslaw Lem
The translator is Michael Kandel, who does a marvelous job of preserving Lem's unique sense of humor.
But while the machine's effort is fictitious, Kandel's work most certainly isn't.
In conclusion, somewhat like that poem, the book is a noble, timeless piece indeed, highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a good, intelligent read.

The sheer virtuosity of the language is breathtaking: the book is packed to the gills with puns, rhymes, nonsense words, and general verbal japery.
Huge amounts of credit must of course go to the translator, Michael Kandel, on this score.
I wish the book included translation notes; he must have had to rebuild innumerable language formations from scratch in order to make them work--and work dazzlingly well--in English.
