		Brooklyn-born choreographer Michael Kidd was presented an Honorary Award, by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the 69th Academy Award Show in 1996.
		Kidd was an engineering student for three years at City College in New York, but became interested in dance and theater through his older brother Phil Greenwald, who was the legendary talent booker for the equally legendary Concord Hotel in New York's Catskill Mountains.
		Michael Kidd's influence continues to be felt on stage, in film, and in television.

From "Li'l Abner" onward he also directed, and sometimes produced, most of the shows on which he worked, but it was as a choreographer of apparently limitless invention that he dominated the Broadway musical during the '50s.

		Through close readings of selected plays from early modern and twentieth-century Spanish literature with plots or characters derived from the Greco-Roman tradition, Michael Kidd shows that the concept of desire plays a pivotal role in adapting myth to the stage in each of several historical periods.
		Kidd explores how seventeenth-century playwrights were constrained by the conventions of the newly formed national theater, and how in the twentieth century mythological desire was exploited by playwrights engaged in upsetting the melodramatic conventions of the entrenched bourgeois theater.
		Michael Kidd is Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico.
