Michael Kidron   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
MICHAEL KIDRON, longtime British socialist and theorist, died last month in London at the age of 72.
Kidron’s work reflected the best of the International Socialist tradition--seeing theory not as an academic pursuit, but as a way to generalize and apply Marxism to the changes in the world after the Second World War, even when it challenged orthodoxy--as in developing the theory of state capitalism in Russia.
Kidron’s article, "A Permanent Arms Economy" remains the best summary explanation of how the Cold War arms race fueled the economic boom of the 1950s and 1960s in the U.S. and Western Europe.

Michael Kidron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
It would seem that he was as alienated from both sides in the muddied debate, which to some degree had the character of a personal struggle for power in a fashion that is strikingly similar to the split which wracked the American SWP in 1940.
Kidron's last major articles in the International Socialism journal cast doubt on his own earlier work, but without renouncing Marxism as so many former revolutionaries would during the downturn of class struggle that marked the eighties.
Kidron remained a Marxist committed to changing the world and therefore understood the necessity of developing a theoretical understanding of how the world works precisely in order to change it.

 Michael Kidron
Michael Kidron was a part of the leadership of the International Socialists (forerunners of the SWP) through the sixties and seventies when that group briefly held the possibility of developing a revolutionary politics that was more than a pallid reflection of the ideas of long dead Russians.
Born in South Africa to a family of Zionists Kidron was a leading theoretician of the Socialist Review Group which he joined on immigrating to Britain from the Israeli state in the early 1950's.
In the early years of the SRG he was to be found in the extended Cliff family which was the informal core of the group and was in fact Chanie Rosenburgs younger brother.

 GAUCHE : March 30, 2003
Michael Kidron, the most prominent of the many leading lights of the British International Socialists who left them in the few years before they became the Socialist Workers' Party, has died at the age of 72.
Kidron was the brains behind the IS, the editor of International Socialism for many years and the author of several of the key texts that marked the group's break from orthodox Trotskyism, in particular from the idea that capitalism had entered a phase of terminal crisis.
IS and Kidron never went a far as Cornelius Castoriadis and Socialisme ou Barbarie in France in challenging the tenets of left orthodoxy (for which see here), but they played an honourable part in creating a vibrant British libertarian Marxism.

 Michael Kidron
This text was written by Kidron in 1977, for the 100th issue of International Socialism, theoretical journal of the SWP.
Kidron's disarming retrospective self-criticism does not imply, of course, that he had come to the conclusion that orthodox Trotskyist critics of the IS-SWP tradition had possessed better theories; rather that these two central ideas of the SWP needed overhauling by new and better theory, not turning into simplistic dogmas.
Some of Kidron's own judgement's here now seem decidedly dated and disproved by events - his view of the evolution of 'state capitalism' and imperialism, and the situation of the working class, have been rendered redundant by the rise of neoliberalism.

 ope-l-0303: [OPE-L:8682] Michael Kidron, 1930-2003
MICHAEL KIDRON, former editor of _International Socialism_ and for Pluto Press and a leading figure in the debates among Marxists about political economy in the 1970's and beyond, has died.
In this period, too, Kidron threw himself into (unpaid) political organising, campaigning and lecturing, acting with charm and panache in a movement often noted for its solemnity and dourness.
But his conviction that an alternative was possible, indeed was being nurtured within the heart of the system, remained undimmed as new networked forms of communication and relationships undermined the command and control relations of earlier capitalism.

 Guardian | Michael Kidron
Michael Kidron, who has died aged 72, was an economist, a Marxist theorist, an agitator, an editor, a publisher and the co-author of the bestselling State Of The World Atlas (1981) and The War Atlas (1983).
Kidron played a key role in developing a theory, that of the permanent arms economy, to account for the west's long postwar boom and the strength of working class reformism.
This Kidron did in some inspired writings, notably in a brilliant critique of Lenin - Imperialism: Highest Stage of Capitalism But One (1962) - on what he labelled the permanent arms economy, and in Western Capitalism Since The War (1968).

'A Permanent Arms Economy' — SWP (Britain)
The explanation developed primarily by Michael Kidron and known as the theory of the permanent arms economy had two aspects.
This had shown that the dynamic which enforced the priorities of exploitation and capital accumulation on the Soviet Union and other countries of the eastern bloc was military competition with the west; Kidron now showed how the same dynamic underlay the long boom.
Michael Kidron further developed the ideas in this article in his book Western Capitalism since the War (London 1968, revised edition London 1970).

Kidron's supreme ability was to use the journal as a means of developing the embryo of what was to become the Socialist Workers Party (SWP).
Kidron's contribution extended far beyond the technicalities of the permanent arms economy to lay the basis for a political strategy.

This Kidron did in some inspired writings, notably in a brilliant critique of Lenin – Imperialism: Highest Stage of Capitalism But One (1962) – on what he labelled the permanent arms economy, and in Western Capitalism Since The War (1968).
In the early 1990s, Kidron returned to that central project of his life – his attempt to understand (and write about) capitalism.
Now that his conception of capitalism had broadened, he wanted to address it – not just as an economic system, but in its political, social and psychological aspects as well – capitalism as a truly total system.

 Obituary
Mike Kidron, who died last month, was probably the most important Marxist economist of his generation, although he never received the recognition he deserved from the academic Marxism of the 1970s and early 1980s.
He had developed the concept of bureaucratic state capitalism to explain the USSR and, in passing, had pointed to arms expenditure as a countervailing factor to the tendency to crises in any form of capitalism.
Mike Kidron expanded on these hints in a series of articles and books from 1957 to the mid-1970s to provide an overview of the system as a whole.
