Kurland's description of himself posted on his Web site, www.michaelkurland.com, and on the jackets of his books is outdated: "A plump, middle-aged man with greying hair and mild, hazel eyes looking out from behind wire-rim glasses, (he) has the perpetually nervous look of a rabbit invited to lunch at the Lions Club."
Kurland may still be carrying an extra 30 pounds, but behind the shrewd eyes and focused, knowing persona lies the lion, not the rabbit.
Kurland, who is 67 and grew up in Manhattan, spent four years in the Army (most of it with the Army Security Agency in Germany) and then entered Columbia University, but didn't finish.

Michael Kurland's protagonist is Professor James Moriarty, and his ingenious strategy is not based on marginalizing or mocking Holmes, but on enlarging the scope of his nemesis.
Kurland himself is a magical mastermind, flawlessly recreating a bygone world, adeptly linking his primary and secondary protagonists, generously offering escape into a brilliant and terrifying time, and, wisely, ending with a warning.
Kurland's story is ingenious and as compelling as that put down by A. Conan Doyle.

Review of Sherlock Holmes: The Hidden Years, by Michael Kurland
Michael Collins gives us a view of the nature of social justice in America of the 1890’s in his “Cross of Gold”.
This concept, like the one in Kurland's previous anthology of My Sherlock Holmes, allows most of the writers to use a different narrator and avoid direct comparison to the style of the original tales.
Kurland's previous anthology, My Sherlock Holmes, was uneven with a couple strong stories and couple weak ones.

 Two Holmesians, no Watson
That's because two Petaluma authors, Michael Kurland and Steve Hockensmith, have published Sherlock Holmes-inspired mysteries that are not narrated by Dr. John Watson, and, in fact, don't include much of Holmes either.
Kurland's Moriarty is still a criminal, but he commits crimes (or plans crimes, because he can often convince others to do the dirty work) for a somewhat worthy cause.
Kurland emphasizes Moriarty's abilities as a scientist and mathematician, who commits crimes to fund the construction of ever-larger telescopes on the moors.

Metroactive Books | 'My Sherlock Holmes'
Michael Kurland opens his weathered bag and, magician-like, produces a large stack of books--too large to have come from so compact a container, yet there they are.
Kurland moved here from San Francisco about three years ago, and while it's not at all like the big, blustering cities he's been drawn to throughout his life, the author says he likes Petaluma and enjoys poking about downtown, rummaging through the paperback section of used book stores.
It was an award, in fact, that partially sparked Kurland's decision to stop writing about alien invaders, plagues, endangered galaxies, and underground mutant organizations and to throw his energies into various types of mysteries.

The Unicorn Girl -- Michael Kurland
Kurland has always reveled in alternate universes (his continuations of Randall Garrett's "Lord Darcy" stories, set in an alternate universe where the Plantagenets are still on the throne and magic works do full justice to Garrett's concepts and characters), and here he takes the idea and runs with it.
Their mutual friend Randall Garrett based his briliant wizard Sir Thomas Leseaux on T.A.Waters, and Kurland takes us through Garrett's universe on the trip, by the way.
He also plays a neat little trick with the inherent possibilities of alternate universe travel that i had never thought of nor encountered elsewhere, having to do with just how close adjacent alternate universes can be.

So I was wary when I picked up Michael Kurland's 'The Infernal Device', but he fell into none of these traps and I soon found myself engrossed in the story.
We have a brief, passing reference to Oscar Wilde for example: but perhaps the most grating such allusion is to Henry Higgins (of My Fair Lady fame) because it actually intrudes on the plot to a degree, fortunately not excessively.
Kurland is the winner of an Edgar Allan Poe fiction award, so I would expect something better than average from him; and he doesn't fail to produce the goods.
