Topic: Michael Laibson

In the News (Tue 14 Feb 12)

  Encyclopedia: Guiding-Light
Michael Tylo (born October 16, 1948) is an American actor.
In spring 1995, with rumors of cancellation growing stronger Michael Laibson succeeded Jill Farren Phelps, and brought back Kim Zimmer's Reva character for good, who had supposedly killed herself 5 years earlier in a bout with postpartum depression.
The show also learned that it would be moving to the old ATWT studios on the West Side of Manhattan (as opposed to their more lavish current studio on the East Side of the city).

 Why The Outrage Page?
Nevermind what had transpired in the 6 months before she started writing the show, much less what had happened to Roger in the 6 years since the character had been carefully reintroduced back onto the Springfield canvas.
No doubt due in part to their frustrating indifference to one of daytime's most popular and long-running characters and, of course, the accompanying ratings slide, GL's Executive Producer Michael Laibson and partner-in-crime McTavish found themselves unemployed before 1996 was over.
In the weeks that followed, loyal fans watched with shock, dismay and disgust as the story of Roger and Holly was thoroughly trashed and completely rewritten to the point that it now bears no resemblance whatsoever to anything that happened between these two characters over the past six years.

Another move considered a blunder by fans was the death of Maureen Reardon Bauer, played by Ellen Parker.
Michael Laibson succeeded Jill Farren Phelps, and brought back Kim Zimmer's Reva character, who had supposedly killed herself 5 years earlier in a bout with postpartum depression.
Zimmer's character has been a business executive, a television host, a princess, a psychic, an Amish woman and a ghost.

Peter Laibson, M.D. wrote (letter 2/23/99): "I think it is either a retinal problem (you are familiar with his past history of regressed retinopathy of prematurity with peripheral lattice degeneration) or possibly other factors, which are not obvious on the objective examination."
Nevyas-Wallace wrote (medical record 3/8/99): "Phone call from patient...He says Dr. Michael Belin and Dr. Peter Laibson each said the cornea looks fine and that the problem must be retinal." Thereafter Nevyas-Wallace's continued to assure Dominic that his problems would clear up with time, but what was written in Nevyas-Wallace's medical records changed.
Laibson, O'Brien, and Belin, the cornea and topography are excellent and that slight drop in visual acuity is symptomatic with marginal acuity at the onset.

Meyer has a lovely drunken moment where he mops the grubby floor out of instinct, the body lagging behind the will.
Michael D. Laibson directs with a sure, Chekhovian touch: the characters are rarely still --- someone is always doing something --- but their actions are grounded in character and never exist for mere movement’s sake, and Josh Zangen has designed a gloriously tawdry set where you can almost smell cherry-bombs wafting from the bathroom.
THE SAVIOR OF FENWAY is one of the year’s best new plays --- a home run, if I must reach for the obvious.

Given his track record at AW, and his familiarity w/ ATWT, people would be more forgiving of Laibson, more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The emotional and physical violence and the strong language that are essential for realism preclude the play from being a take-me-out-to-the-ballgame outing for young families but could help bring youth-adult audiences back to the theater, especially if “The Savior of the Fenway” is promoted differently.
