Michael Langrish, Bishop of Exeter, was invited to observe the spring retreat of the Episcopal Church's House of Bishops and to speak as a representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Bishop Langrish offered an analysis of how the Episcopal Church is viewed in the wider Anglican Communion and urged the U.S. bishops to embrace the recommendations of the Windsor Report.
The Times of London has reported that Bishop Langrish is one of the Church of England leaders that Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has invited to Lambeth Palace April 24 to discuss the future of the Anglican Communion in light of the potential actions of the 75th General Convention.

Church of the Word -- Schism looms, Exeter warns US bishops   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The Bishop of Exeter, Michael Langrish, has delivered an extraordinary speech to ECUSA bishops which makes me believe for the first time that schism might actually be a possibility.
The other significant fact is that Langrish is one of the bishops invited to the meeting at Lambeth Palace 24 April, discussed here, to discuss the "critical" stage the Anglican Communion is at in the light of the General Convention in June.
Langrish continued: 'However, to speak honestly, and I am sure that you would not wish me to do otherwise, there were elements in the proposed report and resolutions which, in the language we were asked to us, give me pause for concern.

Michael Langrish, to ECUSA’s House of Bishops clearly poses these issues and asks of the delegates to the upcoming General Convention the most careful consideration of the choices that lie before them.
The validity of the claim that ECUSA’s action in the matter of Gene Robinson is appropriate for its context must be judged in the light of a larger context “in Christ” that encompasses all provinces of the Anglican Communion, and indeed the church catholic.
These observations led Bishop Langrish to note two points of view that constitute what he holds to be a clear and present danger to the Anglican Communion.

Bishop Langrish’s concerns in a Roman Catholic cathedral chime with similar statements by Roman Catholic leaders about the refusal of the EU to mention Europe’s Christian heritage in its constitution and the barring of the Italian Commission from the EU Commission in the autumn.

 News: NEEDS IMPROVEMENT
The speech recently given by Michael Langrish, [Bishop of Exeter, England; referred to in this article as My Lord Exeter] the Anglican Bishop of Exeter, to ECUSA's House of Bishops (March 17-22, Kanuga, NC) a week ago is now online in its entirety.
Langrish agrees that repentance is needed from ECUSA.
It does seem to me that at this point we get close to the heart of the difficulty that much of the Anglican Communion (including my own Province) has had with what the Episcopal Church did in 2003, and over which there still seems to be much mutual incomprehension.

The Right Reverend Michael Langrish, Bishop of Exeter, was an automatic choice when the County Council was looking for someone who, as Chairman of the Devon Strategic Partnership, would steer the new body towards agreeing multi-agency solutions to Devon's social needs, and eventually formulating a new strategic vision for the county.
In his speech at the DSP's opening conference, the Bishop used a striking image to describe ideal partnership working - the notion of building a dry stone wall where all the stones, whatever their shape and size, must be used and all are vital.
Secure in these clear principles, Bishop Michael is quick to address what he acknowledges as Devon's own particular needs and concerns.

After all, Bishop Michael Langrish — as Canterbury’s representative — proposed it in his 29 March 2006 address to the House of Bishops of ECUSA.

On March 22, Michael Langrish, Bishop of Exeter, representing the Archbishop of Canterbury, gave a significant (I think) speech to our House of Bishops.
Bishop Langrish spoke after a day or so after a special panel assembled by Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold gave the House a preview of some possible resolutions regarding the Windsor Report that will be submitted to General Convention when it meets in June.

The quote that titles this essay comes from the second page of Bishop Langrish’s comments and, it seems to me, is at the heart of the wrestling with his thinking that must be done.  The paragraph from which the quote comes is as follows…
Clarke’s intention in this paragraph is a diminution of context but, rather, an attempt to describe the interplay between our various contexts and the belonging in Christ to which we are all equally called.  Our “unbelongings” are assembled in Christ, not disassembled.
The threat is, of course, that if we do not say these things the Communion will sunder.  That threat could not have been clearer from Bishop Langrish.  Having argued against “mere expediency,” he then provides the means by which it can be enacted.

John Langrish's speech made very clear that the PhD in art and design could be regarded as a minor undertaking not comparable to a "real" (and rigourous?) doctorate.
