Topic: Michael Lefanu

The Literary Gothic | Joseph Sheridan LeFanu
One of the major figures of C19 supernaturalism, LeFanu helped move supernaturalist fiction away from the Gothic's emphasis on external sources of terror and toward a focus on the effects of terror, thus helping to create the psychological basis for supernaturalist and horror lit that continues today.
LeFanu's relatively unknown tale of demon lovers, fairies, witchery, and a narrow escape.
LeFanu's take on the "spectre bridegroom" motif, popular in much C18 and C19 Gothic fiction as well as earlier ballads.

The Cold Spot -- The Dark Angel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The scope of the novel was faithfully reproduced, and Peter Hammond's clever cinematogrophy captures the gothic darkness of the novel with refreshing skill.
LeFanu's novel does drift at times (with characteristic Victorian style) and the writer does well in fitting the film into its time frame.
The crumbling mansions and bleak scenery is chilling and wonderful, and the decadent corruption and murderous finale of Lefanu's psychological thriller will appeal to all fans of the curious or bizarre.

Classics Today.com - Your Online Guide to Classical Music
As you may have guessed, Nicola Lefanu is one such composer, and if you've been repulsed by the music produced from the '70s, '80s, and '90s screech and scratch/grind and grate school of string composition, you should give her works, which happen to come from that same period, your considered attention.
The String Quartet No. 2 is an example of Lefanu's understanding of idiomatic string writing technique that never resorts to irritating extremes of range or cheap, hackneyed effects.
In Lefanu's Concertino for Clarinet and String Orchestra she masterfully integrates the wind instrument with the various string timbres, so what we hear isn't so much a showcase for the clarinet as a truly captivating ensemble piece that celebrates both differences and similarities between reed and string.

 The Flatland Oracles
All of them wrote a number of ghost stories and some of the ghost stories they wrote are among the greatest there are.
The slow creeping incursion of malevolence into the victim’s ordinary life is the element that makes James’s short stories so remarkably shocking, even at this distance in time from the original setting.
Malevolence and terror, the glare of evil faces, ‘the stony grin of unearthly malice,’ pursuing forms in darkness, and ‘long-drawn, distant screams’, are all in place and so is a modicum of blood, shed with deliberation and carefully husbanded, [without] the weltering and the wallowing….

The Weird Review: J. Sheridan LeFanu
The point of all this (yes, there is one) was to lead up to the ghost story writer I consider king of this second category, & that is Joseph Sheridan LeFanu.
He leaves other writers of the time behind as he goes into areas some modern practicioners have trouble with, despite having more apparent claim to the ideas themselves.
Still it's a compromise I don't mind if it's presented as skillfully as a Lewton or a LeFanu presents it, & these stories are not only ahead of their time, but remarkably relevant to ours.

Later they see a mysterious shadow moving, but Shorthouse again reasons it out, saying that it is "only the beastly jumping candle-light" (Blackwood 228).
Similarly in "Squire Toby’s Will" by J.S. LeFanu, Cooper the butler gives a rational explanation for mysterious shadows seen by the nurse, saying "not a soul but what ye saw, - it’s just a trifle o’ the fever in his head – no more" (LeFanu 46).
Ghosts with a physical presence, however, are less likely to be rationalized and therefore dismissed as non-real.

Probably the most distinguishing characteristic of LeFanu's writing to me is that he doesn't explain why something is happening in his stories.
Ghosts search through drawers, skeletons are dug up, heroes disappear, and barons die of unseen causes, and we are never told what happened.
LeFanu doesn't necessarily explain the motives and occurrences of his stories and loose ends are not all tied up.

On the surface, "RETURN TO GLENNASCAUL" is a standard ghost story in the J. Sheridan LeFanu vein.
What makes it special is the incredible rich fl and white photography used by Hilton James to create a creepy, desolate mood.
