Biographical Notes on Rabbi Lerner — A Jewish Magazine, an Interfaith Movement
Michael Lerner began his graduate school career in philosophy in 1964 and soon found himself involved in a leadership role in the student movements of the 1960s.
Lerner argued that it was precisely the legacy of Jewish values articulated in Torah, Talmud and the Hallakhic tradition, combined with the powerful cultural and historical legacy of a people facing oppression, that had led to this heightened moral sensitivity among one section of Jews.
Lerner was picked by Utne Reader as "one of America’s 100 most significant visionaries" and he is a frequent lecturer and "scholar in residence" at universities and synagogues around the U.S., Canada, and England.

"Jimmy Carter, Michael Lerner - Lerner Reaches Out to President Carter - Forward.com"
Michael Lerner, founding editor of the liberal bimonthly Tikkun, wrote in an email to the magazine’s contributors early this month that he is in the process of exploring the possibility of working with the former president to build support for a left-wing alternative to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
Lerner mentioned that he and Carter had just spoken on the phone about the issue, but declined to discuss specifics, saying the chat was confidential.
Lerner is not alone among Jews on the left eager to launch a counterweight to the pro-Israel lobbying powerhouse.

Cognitive Dissidents ~ Steven Salaita - What Is Michael Lerner Really Talking About?
Lerner prefers to highlight what he deems both Israeli and Palestinian immorality and discusses the two parties as if there is historical and political equivalency between their deeds.
The first condition for peace that Lerner articulates includes “the full and unequivocal recognition by Palestinians and the State of Palestine and all surrounding Arab states of the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state.” For Lerner, peace always is coterminous with preserving at all costs Israel’s Jewish majority.
Indeed, one senses in Lerner’s entire body of work a profound desire not to liberate the Palestinians from occupation, but to liberate from his psyche the culpability he and other Jews feel as a result of the occupation so their comfortably romanticized worldview can flourish without the inconvenience of guilt.

Michael Lerner: From What Is to What Ought to Be
Lerner was deeply inspired in his youth by Abraham Heschel, one of modernity's greatest Jewish theologians.
A radical while he studied philosophy at U.C. Berkeley in the sixties, Lerner ultimately decided that the liberal and progressive movements were defeating themselves because they were not addressing the ethical and spiritual dimensions of the human experience.
While I agreed with Lerner's emphatic declaration that spiritual evolution should result in active transformation of the world, the automatic association of the spiritual and the fiercely political was not always as obvious to me as it was to him.

Rabbi Lerner’s vision of 9/11-truth-triggered social and spiritual change is ambitious and provocative: “In my new book The Left Hand of God: Taking Back Our Country from the Religious Right, I present a Spiritual Covenant with Americans which shows a very different way to challenge the power of war- and violence-oriented ideologies.
Rabbi Lerner wisely cautions 9/11 activists to keep their eyes on the prize—a positive vision of a post-9/11-truth world—and to avoid focusing too narrowly on the evil people responsible for 9/11.
