Michael possessed an abundance of energy, a keen wit, a vastly superior intellect, a patriotic zeal, a heartfelt love of country and his fellow man, and a huge commitment to Ireland.
Michael Collins declared that he was a soldier, not a politician, but the issue went to the Cabinet and was decided by de Valera's casting vote.
Michael Collins knew that a Republic that included Ulster was not possible under the present conditions, but he hoped for a boundary commission that would redraw the border to include much of Catholic Fermanagh and Tyrone in the newly created Free State.

In a project that began in the spring of 1994, Michael Mallin and Lawrence Cahoon of UNC- Wilmington have been analyzing and experimenting with water samples from the Cape Fear River upstream and downstream of Wilmington and from the New River near Sneads Ferry.
The purpose of their experiments was to determine which nutrient (phosphorous or nitrogen) and which seasonal conditions favor algal growth in the rivers.

Mallin says that a favorable regulatory climate and the availability of an inexpensive waste-disposal system led to a phenomenal rise in the N.C. swine population, from 2.7 million head in 1990 to more than 10 million head in 1998.
Mallin and his colleagues have found that even when swine lagoons are not overtopped in a heavy rain, waste washed from sprayfields can severely degrade nearby waters.
In Sampson County, N.C., where atmospheric ammonia has been measured since 1988, Mallin and his colleagues found that 72 percent of the variability in airborne ammonia during the past decade can be explained by the expansion of the county's swine population alone.

Because of organic concentrations, light limitation and other physical factors unique to flwater rivers, bacteria, protozoa, and algal species that utilize organic materials are abundant, and algae that depend on sun light and inorganic nitrogen are usually low in these waters.
However, during the summer of 1995, UNC-Wilmington scientist Dr. Michael Mallin documented massive blooms of photosynthetic algae in flwater streams flooded with animal wastes from failed lagoons.
Since the highest concentrations of nutrient-producing swine operations are in counties draining into flwater tributaries of the Cape Fear Basin, information is needed about the potential effects of waste spills and runoff and groundwater discharge from land application sites on the biota of flwater streams.

The fouling of North Carolina's coastal waters by animal waste in the wake of Hurricane Floyd is the latest, and perhaps the most dramatic, chapter in a controversy over the environmental impact of factory-style swine and poultry operations, which have been expanding in coastal watersheds during the 1990s.
Michael Mallin has been monitoring the often severe impacts of waste spills and everyday operations on marine life in the Cape Fear estuarine system since 1995.
His data now cover three hurricane events (including Floyd) and suggest that the animal operations allowed under current state and federal regulations in the eastern and midwestern U.S. pose serious risks for water quality, safety and marine ecology.
