 Spartanburg SC | GoUpstate.com | Spartanburg Herald-Journal
Michael Maltese (born February 6, 1908 in New York City, died February 22, 1981) was a long-time storyboard artist and screenwriter for classic animated cartoon shorts.
In 1941, Maltese was hired by Leon Schlesinger Productions, which three years later became Warner Bros. Cartoons, Inc. (Maltese had actually appeared on camera in a 1940 Porky Pig cartoon as a guard at the Warner Brothers entrance gate, who winds up chasing Porky around the Warner's lot, entitled You Ought to Be in Pictures.).
Maltese also did scripts for comic books published by Western Publishing, including for many of the same Warner Brothers and Hanna-Barbera characters whose animated exploits he scripted.

  One Froggy Evening
One Froggy Evening is a 1955 six-minute color animated short film written by Michael Maltese[?] and Directed by Chuck Jones, it was part of Warner Brothers' Merrie Melodies series of cartoons.
The cartoon has no spoken dialog, relying on visuals, sound effects, and music: mostly songs from the ragtime era, including Hello Ma Baby, and one new song written for the cartoon (The Michigan Rag), in the same style.
The story may have been inspired by the real-life tale of Old Rip, a horned toad[?] who survived 31 years sealed in the cornerstone of the courthouse in Eastland, Texas.

The Frog was not a star when Warner Bros.' One Froggy Evening (which was written by Michael Maltese and directed by Chuck Jones) premiered on December 31, 1955.
Even his name was given to him only in retrospect — in the cartoon itself, neither he nor his tormented victim had names.
His last name is from his body type, his first from "The Michigan Rag" (the one song that Maltese wrote especially for him), and his middle from the fact that unless evidence exists to the contrary, all cartoon characters are considered to have J. for a middle initial.

The Lineup   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
In the late `40s, storyman Michael Maltese and director Chuck Jones were searching for the right combination of far-out animals to populate the cartoon they envisioned as a parody of the constant chases that had come to dominate animation.
So for 15 years, Maltese and Jones had to content themselves with turning out one of the most popular series of cartoons ever made.
There he is, staring at the dynamite, watching the impending onslaught of arrows, or, worst of all, sailing off one of those ubiquitous 5-mile cliffs, with nothing to do but submit to his fate--then go on with the next scheme, momentarily restored by the fadeout, pretending none of this has happened.

Proposition: Michael Maltese was perhaps the funniest man of the 20th century.
I found the part where the anguished dog rejects the owner's cat-shaped cookie to be a fascinating allegory of a postwar subconsumerist society's revulsion towards organized Christianity and blind obedience of authority in lieu of a strong, personal moral center that is nevertheless only able to change the status quo through subversion and struggle.
Mike Maltese did great stories and storyboards, but like the other writers at Termite Terrace most of his boards went through intensive pitch sessions with people from every department (and other teams) throwing in ideas and suggestions.

The list was fairly lengthy, and I can't clearly remember all the names that were on it other than—in addition to Chuck's perennial favorites, Eddie Selzer and Leon Schlesinger—it definitely included Bob Clampett, Carl Stalling, Rod Scribner, and Walter Lantz—for reasons that Benny was always unable—or maybe unwilling—to articulate.
For a while, Michael Maltese seemed to also be on Chuck's list, presumably for leaving Chuck in 1958 to work for Hanna-Barbera, for more money than Warners was willing to pay.
I edited this oral history together from nearly 60 hours of taped interviews with Bob Clampett, done mostly by Michael Barrier and myself in the 1970s.
