Michael Martin (politician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael John Martin MP (born 3 July 1945) is the current Speaker of the House of Commons in the United Kingdom.
Martin was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1945, the son of a merchant seaman and a school cleaner.
Martin's strong Glaswegian accent led to his being nicknamed Gorbals Mick by some people from outside of Scotland, although the nickname is inaccurate, as Martin is from the Anderston and Springburn areas of Glasgow and has never lived in the Gorbals.

Martin served with distinction in the State Senate in 1895 and for four terms in the State Legislature between 1899 and 1907.
In most pre-election conferences Martin held the balance of power and it was his habit to remain non-committal until the last possible moment.
On 13 June 1922 a motion, moved by Martin, was passed by the House of Representatives by 121 votes to 66.

Michael Collins occasionally loses focus and momentum, but is the kind of exciting historical drama that deserves to be called "sweeping." It is also one of the most beautifully photographed films in years: cinematographer Chris Menges uses color and texture to set moods and accent emotions.
Michael Collins was one of the leaders of the Irish Rebellion that finally brought freedom to Ireland.
Michael Collins was born in 1890 in West Cork, a farmer's son, and introduced to the quest for Irish sovereignty by his schoolmaster, a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, which Collins soon joined as well and in whose ranks he began to rise during his nine years as a London clerk (1905-14).

The Vatican says “no” to same-sex marriages
The denial of the social and legal status of marriage to forms of cohabitation that are not and cannot be marital is not opposed to justice; on the contrary, justice requires it.
Chretien suffers from the same “split personality” problem as many other Catholic politicians: they claim to be devout Catholic in their private lives, but they also anti-Catholic views in public, like abortion and the legalization of same-sex marriages.
Like a professional politician, Chretien is quick to flip-flop and change his tune: To the Bishops, he says a prime minister is responsible to the people, not to the Pope.

MichaelMoore.com : Sunnis see Shi'ite manipulation ahead of Iraq vote
BAGHDAD - Sunni officials and independent Iraqi politicians reacted with dismay on Monday at a move by the Shi'ite and Kurdish majority to make it harder to defeat an October 15 referendum on a new constitution.
Analysts also questioned the fairness of the move by Iraq's parliament, which set electoral rules making it far simpler for the draft constitution to pass -- as Shi'ites and Kurds want -- than for it to be defeated by Sunni opponents.
Mutlaq, the Sunni politician, said he and others may now call on Sunnis to boycott the referendum, a move that could further marginalise the community from the political process.

Posted by Martin Wisse on 03/20 at 06:59 PM Actually, Martin, but (as I’ve noted on your site, in response to your response) the point of my post is that the Beinart Effect leads otherwise intelligent liberals and progressives to take the threat of terrorism too seriously.
Posted by Michael on 03/21 at 12:06 PM Opposing the war in Iraq is well and good, but the real question is *liberal imperialism*, which MB has managed to shroud in a postmodernist fog.

Maybe not: as this column reported last month, Martin's expenses will be made public in October, when the first register of MPs' allowances is published.
"Michael and I have known each other for years, and we're mates most of the time, but that speech was pure smuggery," he said.

"Michael Martin is to be commended both for addressing an important issue, the ethics of rape (though he is actually responding to Christians who challenged atheism) and, more significantly, for compelling Christians to defend the standards of Mosaic law in order to defend the character of the Christian God.
His is exactly the kind of argument atheists should use.
"Atheist Antony Flew has said that the "onus of proof must lie upon the theist." Unless compelling reasons for God's existence can be given, there is the "presumption of atheism." Another atheist, Michael Scriven, considers the lack of evidence for God's existence and the lack of evidence for Santa Claus on the same level.
