McDonald played in several local bands (such as Mike and the Majestics, Jerry Jay and the Sheratons, the Reebtoors, and The Guild) while attending McCluer High School in his hometown of Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis.
McDonald was recruited by The Doobie Brothers in April 1975 when lead singer Tommy Johnston became ill during a national tour.

Jeff Bridges (the actor) was the host of the show and even performed a song from his new album at the time.
If you are buying this DVD to see all McDonald, there are times that he seems to step back, but I think it says a lot about him, that he is willing to step out of the limelight for a song or two and kind of be the supporting voice.
