Michael's art projects are in the permanent collections of the Exploratorium in San Francisco, the American Museum of the Moving Image in New York, and the Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe.
Michael is on the Board of Directors of the ZeroOne Foundation in Palo Alto; the Board of Advisors of the Media Lab Europe in Dublin; and the Editorial Boards of Leonardo Electronic Almanac and Presence journals, both from MIT Press.

 Multimedia – From Wagner to Virtual Reality
Media artist and technologist Michael Naimark has always managed to be well-positioned in seminal developments of interactive multimedia and virtual reality.
The Aspen Movie Map was Naimark's first exploration into what he refers to as "surrogate travel," in which the viewer is transported virtually to another place.
Naimark eventually landed at Interval Research in 1992 – Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's Silicon Valley-based think tank – where he created his immersive virtual reality installation Be Now Here.

Naimark's obsession is emblematic of a national debate that is growing as video cameras proliferate -- a proliferation that results both from falling monitoring costs, made possible by the Internet, and increasing safety concerns in the face of crime and terrorism.
Naimark discovered that there was already military literature widely available about using lasers to blind sensors, and that it was relatively simple to become invisible in front the cameras that now watch over many public spaces in this country.
Naimark acknowledged that he had some ethical discomfort about his project because his information could be useful to terrorists, he decided to go ahead.
