Michael Nyman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael Nyman (born March 23, 1944) is a British minimalist composer, pianist, librettist and musicologist, perhaps best known for the many scores he wrote during his lengthy collaboration with the British filmmaker Peter Greenaway.
Nyman studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Although Nyman's score was central to the movie he did not receive an Academy Award nomination despite being nominated for both a British Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

Michael Nyman was born in England in 1944, and followed a normal musical background, through music college and was set to become a pianist and composer.
Nyman is the person we have to thank for the word, 'minimalism', a term he had used in one of his concert reviews, and it was in this musical style that he now started writing music for his 'band'.
Nyman has drawn as many detractors as admirers, his style at times polarized to the excesses of the classical avant garde, at others he is composing in such an overtly romantic style that it is difficult to know whether his acute sense of fun is at work.

With Greenaway, Nyman always reflects the quirky and slightly amoral side to the characters, but for Winterbottom he provides a warm, glowing backdrop that suggests the people in his film are fundamentally good, but life gets in the way of that sometimes.
While the Michael Nyman Band could never be described as a symphony orchestra, it sounds more like a modern chamber orchestra than ever for Wonderland; as with his more romantic scores of late, the music is string led, but with a prominent saxophone part on occasion.
Nyman himself performs the piano on several of the tracks on occasions when an even more intimate atmosphere is required.

 Michael Nyman - film composer
The music for these Peter Greenaway films was played by the Nyman Band, whose distinctive sound hinted at Jazz with its prominent Saxophones, but took short phrases and chord sequences mostly from the Baroque and Classical eras, and delivered these with gusto whilst repeating and varying sections using alterations in instrumentation and colour.
Nyman's music has evolved while he has worked with a number of different directors and film styles, so that it is no longer as strictly minimalist as previously.
Michael Nyman has been known to introduce himself to a French audience as "The English Yann Tiersen" so if you like Nyman's music you might wish to sample some by Tiersen (or vice versa).

Nyman finally came into his element when he was hired in 1982 to score Peter Greenaway’s film "The Draughtman’s Contract." This led to more and varied film work, though he is well known for his collaborations with Greenaway.
Nyman's work is characterized by his Baroque-influenced use of repetitive tones, including thumping keyboards, bass clarinets, baritone saxophones, and extreme high and low octave doublings.
The past few years have seen Nyman increase his output, as he composed soundtracks for "The Ogre," "The Diary of Anne Frank," "Carrington," "Gattaca" (nominated for a Golden Globe), "Practical Magic," "Wonderland," the cannibalistic fl comedy "Ravenous," and most recently "The End of the Affair," which was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

Guardian Unlimited Arts | Arts features | Michael Nyman and Shobana Jeyasingh's new collaboration
Even though she had wanted Nyman to compose the music for Configurations in his own idiom, she had, perhaps naively, expected him to pin his score on to the exact mathematical sequences of her choreography.
Nyman, for instance, had ended the final section with a strictly written chorale; in the meantime, Jeyasingh had structured her choreography so that it would end on a note of irresolution ("I wanted the feeling that the piece would carry on if only people were staying to watch it," she explains).
Nyman agreed to make the necessary change but there were other elements of the music's voice over which Jeyasingh could have less control.

That acute sensitivity to occasion and context is enriched by a talent, shared with baroque composers, for refiguration; the 1995 Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings develops ideas previously encountered in The Convertibility of Lute Strings and Tango for Tim; the Third String Quartet lies behind the score for Christopher Hampton's 1996 movie Carrington.
Michael Nyman's first recording on EMI Classics, entitled Three Concertos, was released in October 1997.
These three concertos reveal the state of Michael Nyman's art: astonishingly wide in their frame of reference; juxtaposing passion and irony, seriousness and wit, populism and sophistication.

Michael Nyman's music and his band seemed to have burst onto the scene in the early eighties with the composer's vision fully rounded and formed.
Nyman was born in London in 1944 and studied at the Royal College of Music and King's College.
On graduation, Nyman felt alienated from the then current compositional orthodoxy (heavily influenced by Stockhausen and Boulez) and embarked upon a career as a music writer and critic for The Listener, The Spectator and The New Statesman, covering everything from The Beatles, to The Fugs and Cornelius Cardew.

classical music - andante - noisy sounds and sweet magic airs
Perhaps this is mainly due to the psychologically intoxicating effect of his simple, reiterated progressions in asymmetrical rhythm, the frantic activity of his percussive melodic patterns (it's no mere chance that Nyman coined the word "minimalism"), or to the anachronistic - almost timeless - color of his brass timbres.
Unfortunately, the acoustic did not help the ensemble: the brass frequently overpowered the strings, while the naturally vigorous voices of the three singers were often amplified to a deafening level.
But the Ravenna Festival's idea was basically good, inasmuch as hearing the Michael Nyman Band live is an absolutely worthwhile experience (the unannounced cuts in the program notwithstanding).

Nyman used popular Scottish songs as the basis for his compositions which were tailored to Hunter's performing abilities and to the repertoire of the 19th Century.
Because the actress played the work in a softer style than Nyman's, he has claimed that Hunter "discovered all the life and passion beneath the surface of the music." Although the film's music was integral to its success, its score was overlooked for Oscar consideration.

Jane Campion's choice of Michael Nyman to produce the soundtrack for "The piano" was truly inspired for this unusual film.
Nyman realised this immediately and sought first of all to create the right sound for Ada's music.
He decided that she was from Scotland and, as a self-taught musician, would compose music layering Scottish folk, dance and popular songs from the era (Victorian 1850s) onto a classical foundation.

Despite the fact that Michael Nyman has been somewhat dismissed by the contemporary music milieu there is no doubt that he has carved his place in music history.

It is with "The End of the Affair," performed by the Michael Nyman Orchestra, that I realize I ought to place my views firmly, diplomatically in the middle.
Nyman has an unconventional way with counterpoint (and lack thereof) that is lush and thoroughly amazing, and the themes are memorable and inhabit the soundscape aggressively well.
Nyman reprises the attractive, but sometimes wearying string-laden intensity familiar from Carrington and Wonderland.

Sangam is Michael Nyman's latest and boldest attempt to fuse two diametrically opposed musical worlds, the improvisatory world of Indian classical music and the pre-composed world of Nyman.
Nyman's harmonic cushion (in D major predominantly) is woven out of a chord progression set at random against the vocals of the Indian singers.
Although my love affair with Nyman has dwindled over the past five years, this record is fusion in the best sense.

Although Nyman appears to have taken Purcell as the basis for much of the music, notably in using some of Purcell's own ground basses, one could never confuse this with real music of the period.
Nyman notes that he is actively trying to avoid the music being pastiche, but this kind of neo-renaissance style of writing is pastiche of a sort.
It's certainly a different and interesting approach to the period score and given that Nyman started writing a thesis on music of that period, it is clearly written with an air of authority.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Noises, Sounds & Sweet Airs - Michael Nyman at Epinions.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Michael Nyman’s Noises, Sounds & Sweet Airs is a modified version of Nyman’s score for Karine Saporta’s opera-ballet, La Princesse de Milan, written during and after the period in 1990-91 when Nyman was also working on the score for Peter Greenaway’s film Prospero’s Books; both works have their source in Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
Nyman makes full use of the dramatic tension in Shakespeare’s text, and the various sections move along quite fluently.
Add to that the “poetics” (Nyman’s word) behind the assignment of voices to various passages, and Nyman comes up with several opportunities for wonderful duets and trios, such as section 11, between Stephano and Caliban, sung by Summers and Bostridge, which is very dramatic and in parts, downright evil.

Michael Nyman has written many fine soundtracks for Peter Greenaway films, but his music for the British director's cinematic version of Shakespeare's The Tempest ranks as one of his best.
A third of the program consists of elegiac vocal pieces, which feature Sarah Leonard's beautifully soaring, "boy soprano" voice (the inclusion of vocals was accidental, as Nyman textually mistook the play's locale to be island of voices instead of an "isle of noises" -- a fortuitous oversight considering the charm of these pieces).
Nyman enlists the talents of the Balenescu Quartet (who have also recorded Nyman's first three string quartets) and tenor saxophonist John Harle to form the core of his excellent 22-piece band.
