Ryanair beat BA to No1 position in Europe
Said Ryanair's chief executive Michael OLeary, "It's official -- Ryanair has today become the world's favourite airline!" He said the airline's passenger numbers is expected to grow 27 per cent in the year through March to 35 million travellers.
It is launching its 14th European base at Pisa, Italy and may announce a new base each in September and October.
O'Leary said Ryanair's decision not to impose a fuel surcharge had helped it to have more passengers.

 Free Term Papers on Ryanair
Considering OLearys brag about punctuality, it is odd to note that Ryanair "does not offer, and cannot facilitate, transfer for passengers or their baggage to other flights, whether operated by Ryanair or other carriers.
Ryanair seems to delight in stuffing what appear to be iron bars down the backs of some seats, then gleefully informing squirming passengers that no cushions are available on board to ease aching spines.
Since OLeary took charge of Ryanair in 1991, when the airline was on the verge of bankruptcy, he has either been engaged in crisis management or cracking the whip to ensure that the airline meets its stated growth objective of at least 25% per year.

O'Leary faxed back, saying the ads were "valid criticisms of Sabena's outrageously high air fares." Sensing a crush of free publicity, O'Leary had his fax translated and distributed to every major Belgian newspaper.
Realizing that O'Leary had no intention to acquiesce, Sabena took its case to court, saying that Ryanair's ads were "provoking and denigrating and misleading the consumer in a cunning way." The brief also charged that Ryanair was misusing the Sabena trademark.
O'Leary and Ryanair have vociferously taken issue with O'Rourke and the tariffs that Aer Rianta, the operator of Ireland's airports, applies to airlines at the Dublin and Shannon hubs.

But Ryanair said it was ready to negotiate a new deal with airport and regional authorities allowing it to keep its costs low.
The Commission ruled that Ryanair had benefitted unfairly from secret clauses in its contract with the Wallonia regional government, which owns Charleroi, enabling the airline to receive steep discounts on landing fees and ground-handling charges, as well as help to meet the costs of marketing and crew training.
Ryanair is appealing against the Commission's decision in the European Court in Luxembourg.

Whatever you think of Michael O’Leary’s free wheeling espousal of free market economics, many of us have found his Ryanair service is invaluable for getting around Europe at a decent price.
Nearly all the airline’s Irish based pilots are complaining of victimisation stemming from O’Leary’s efforts to get them to accept repayment of “the €15,000 cost of their training if the airline was forced to deal with a trade union within the next five years”.
Ryanair has maintained that its pilots are among the best paid in the industry and can earn up to €130,000 a year.

 Slugger O'Toole: O'Leary facing pilot's revolt?
Posted by: Young Fogey at June 22, 2005 11:15 AM Michael O'Leary doesn't like unions and this is his way of disincentivising (apologies for the appalling term - I work for an American company and we use this type of awful language all the time) the pilots from forming a rebel alliance.
Posted by: la Dolorosa at June 22, 2005 03:27 PM I'm not sure that Michael O'Leary did say that but in real terms that is what the airline industry is about at the moment - maximising profits by getting bums on seats.

The bid to turn Ryanair into a hand-luggage only airline is being driven by a fares war between the company and its rivals.
Ryanair has already cut its maximum hold baggage allowance to 15kg per passenger - the smallest in the aviation industry.
And Mr O'Leary is in typically dismissive mood to those who point out that the policy could be a bit troublesome for those contemplating a family holiday, and could alienate more than it attracts.

Air France refuted the claims: It told Forbes.com that Ryanair's complaints were primarily a publicity-seeking maneuver and pointed out it was the state that fixed taxes.

WHEN Michael O’Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, dressed up as a cardinal last week to announce the launch of the airline’s new route from Dublin to Rome and declared “Habemus lowest fares — my children”, he undoubtedly offended a few Catholics.
On the other hand, O’Leary does admit that you have to be “certifiably insane” to work in the airline industry, adding that anyone who is prepared to take the helm at Aer Lingus “needs to have their head examined”.
Previous publicity stunts have seen the Ryanair boss dress up as St Patrick, arrive at Stansted airport, the airline’s British hub, in a tank and, in the company’s 2003 annual report, be photographed as “Michelle”, a French chambermaid.

Ryanair's fuel costs had more than doubled in the second quarter, and it now expects costs to remain high "for some time".

O'Leary said Ryanair is completely committed to even lower fares, looking to enhance revenue from onboard passenger purchases of goods and services and convincing airports to share the parking and retail revenues his passengers bring in to push fares down, ideally to zero.
A lot of fighting is going to be needed to reverse the reregulation trends, including enlisting the support of passengers and joining the European Low Fare Airline Assn. for concerted action, O'Leary said.
Bottom line is Ryanair will be flying long after the "flag" carriers have exhausted even illegal state aid.
