Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by Symphony X keyboard player Michael Pinnella called Enter By The Twelfth Gate
It has been more than two years since the release of the last Symphony X album (The Odyssey / 2002), and it seems that the members of the band are finding it quite difficult to tame their creative cravings.
But that’s not the only reason why Michael Pinnella, the band’s keyboard player, decided that this was the right time to release his debut album "Enter By The Twelfth Gate".
Michael is the latest victim of this well-known disease called "solo career" which apparently affects most progressive rock/Metal musicians at some point during their career.

Although the keyboard skills of Michael Pinnella have not been mentioned yet, here they are on ample display as he opens "Incantations of the Apprentice." This song has a more orchestral opening before it launches back into that dark heavy crunch that has been the constant thus far on this disc.
Michael Pinnella has his opportunity to shine with not only sweet, haunting piano lines, but full, lush keyboard parts that complement the neo-classical guitar lines from Michael Romeo.
While Romeo is adding his crunch on guitar, Pinnella counters with deft piano lines, the song growing as everyone comes together in a majestic and triumphant synergy to close the song.

Michael Pinnella- Enter by the Twelfth Gate
Michael Pinnella, in his solo release, “Enter by the Twelfth Gate”, shows that he is more than a metal keyboardist.
In original compositions, and a take on a classical Etude, Pinnella shows that he is a composer on top of everything.
Yet, I would conclude that it has more than good, and the evidence is shown that Michael is innocent of being a bad musician, and of putting out a bad release.

Michael Pinnella has written, recorded and mixed “Enter...“ — apart from a newly arranged Scriabin Étude — completely on his own.
Here you are listening to purely Pinnella.“ Though a Pinnella in a pure unadulterated fashion who cannot and did not want to deny his preferences for classical stuff as well as his roots in rock music.

When I first opened the package from InsideOut Music and saw a solo release from Symphony X’s keyboardist, Michael Pinnella, I immediately thought it was going to be a shred fest similar in vein to Sym X. Boy I was so wrong, in fact I absolutely am pleasantly surprised to hear such beautifully orchestrated music.
Michael Pinnella is truly one of the better keyboard players of our day, prog metal or other.
Musically Michael treads in a classical vein with some very tasteful bombastic moments that aren't too over the top.

Michael Pinnella, keyboard player from Symphony X, belongs to the very best keyboard players on the metal scene, and this, his first solo-album shows, that he's able to write some wonderful music.
No analog devices on this album, which is a shame, because I feel, that a lot of tracks could have been just that much better with a guitar riff or guitar solo.
But off course this is all about Michael's music and his playing abilities.

And that is exactly what Symphony X keyboardist extraordinaire, Michael Pinnella has done, with his first solo release "Enter By The Twelfth Gate".
The album is essentially Michael showing off his virtuoso keyboard skills to the max on this truly impressive debut offering of pure instrumental heaven.
All in all this is a very impressive record that I'm sure that will appeal to Symphony X fans but also lovers of just great keyboard playing and incredible music at the fingers of one of Prog Rock's great keyboard players.

MICHAEL PINELLA Enter By the Twelfth Gate reviews
Don't be scared of the idea of a synth-only album...the technology PINNELLA employs is pretty good, and the producton (with one little bitty exception) shines.
Rather, PINNELLA has quite a tendency to jump around schizophrenically between themes, moods, and atmosphere, hardly staying on one thing for even a minute at a time, and (in my opinion) sometimes not seeming to spend much time in really planning out transitions.
From this, I get the feeling that rather than PINNELLA, it is guitarist MICHAEL ROMEO that is responsible for the "bigger picture" of SYMPHONY X's songs and albums and perhaps PINNELLA who helps fill in the details and themes.

From tripped out pulsing space age scale runs to quick witted piano concertos, Michael Pinnella does what all the great prog keyboardists do; dabble and show ownership in everything.
Like other instrumental albums that hold the focus on one instrument the knowledge and intimacy that is shared in a musical environment of the instrument's own is always an eye opening experience.
With Enter By The Twelfth Gate, Michael Pinnella opens up his gate of musical creativity and lets us all sit in to listen.

This is one great cd, but don't buy this expecting the same delivery as Symphony X. Michael Pinnella has already established himself as an incredibly talented keyboard player with his ridiculous displays of chops heard in SyX solos.
Although it is not metal, one can certainly hear who provides the exquisite and refined textures in Symphony X. After hearing this cd, I hope Symphony X continues to balance the power and raw technical mastery of guitarist Michael Romeo with the grand touch that Pinnella clearly demonstrates on this cd.

This doesn’t come as a suprise since Micheal Pinnella is a graduate of the conservatory, being specialised in the writing and playing of classical music.

 SYMPHONY X
Guitarist Michael Romeo received a lot of praise and interest for his selfproduced solo-tape "The Dark Chapter", which eventually led to the birth of Symphony X. First bandmember to arrive on the scene was bassplayer Thomas Miller, who had played with Michael on numerous occasions throughout the last ten years.
Shortly after that vocalist Rod Tyler and drummer Jason Rullo were added to the band and finally with the arrival of Michael Pinnella, the first Symphony X line-up was complete.
The first album - simply titled "Symphony X" - was recorded in August/September '94 and released in Japan in December the same year.
