The Movie Chicks - Interview - Lynn Collins and Michael Radford
Michael: The thing about Shakespeare is that if you do it, the more you do it, the more you direct and rehearse it, the more you love it.
While we were doing the courtroom scene, Michael was trying to direct me to take away the emotion that I've always prided myself on as an actress, to really let it go and delve into this unbiased lawyer - to go in without emotion, without allowing themselves to be riled by the witnesses.
Michael: I think the most important thing is - there's this whole theory of acting, which is about status, a theory of human behavior, that we all adopt a status instantly.

"Chairman of the Bard": Film Freak Central Interviews Director Michael Radford
The best films of British director Michael Radford (whose best known film is probably the Oscar-nominated Il Postino) are his directorial debut, Another Time, Another Place, and his grim 1984 adaptation of George Orwell's suddenly-current-again 1984.
Radford proved more than willing to set alleged misquotes straight, as well as to share his view of not only the cultural differences between the U.S. and Europe, but also the cultural similarities between the U.S. and Orwell's dystopia
MICHAEL RADFORD: They say that but what I don't understand is how they can say that when so many great Jewish actors have played this role--when Shakespeare saved some of his most beautiful, impassioned speeches for Shylock.

Compounding this, Radford has teased from the play's text a striking gay subtext, which is gilding the lily in a play already rife with anti-Semitism, sexual identity issues, and thoroughly unlikable characters with whom empathy is well nigh impossible.
In Radford's film version, however, it's hard not to see the climax as acting out a revisionist crucifixion, with Antonio, strapped to a chair like Jesus to the cross, at the mercy of the law because of a Jew.
Radford's sensible dialog tweaks ("glisten" for "glister" for example) that clarify and contextually add etymological depth (judiciously retaining the archaic "tarry" and "soft" for "wait" and "quiet" respectively) also deserve credit.

Radford is scheduled to present his films in person.
Adept at portraying the humor in life, as well as the tears, Radford strives to "make audiences laugh and cry without their feeling, if I may be so bold, that they are being manipulated.
Again, Radford works the love theme, since protagonist Winston Smith's ultimate downfall begins with the passing of a note that simply says, "I love you." Radford's direction of John Hurt and Richard Burton (in his last role) is outstanding.
