He was elected unanimously tsar of Russia by a national assembly on February 21, 1613, but not till March 24 did the delegates of the council discover the young tsar and his mother at the Ipatiev Monastery near Kostroma.
Sweden and Poland were then dealt with respectively by the peace of Stolbovo (February 17, 1617) and the Truce of Deulino (December 1, 1618).

The most important result of the truce of Deulina was the return from exile of the tsar's father, who henceforth took over the government till his death in October 1633, Michael occupying quite a subordinate position.Foreign sources sometimes report that Tsar Mikhail suffered from a foot disease and was not able to walk.
This is, however, an improper rendering of the Russian royal court custom, whereby the sovereign was supposed to be supported from both sides by close advisors whenever walking to and from official ceremonies.
