  Michael Rother at curved-air.com
Rother’s multi-tracked guitars ring from the plaintive to the screaming in the upper registers, layered around four different five-note melodies that recur either as single string statements triple-track or stark chords supporting them.
Rother’s re-harmonizing of his original melody throughout the piece in various segments has a mirroring effect over its 37 minutes; it’s as if we are taken into the nether-side of his composition and feel its various spaces and textures from all angles.
Michael Rother has gotten close to this with many of his albums, but this one is singular in its achievement, a perfect melding of taste, dynamics, pace, melodic invention, emotional and spiritual honesty, all woven into the spirit of rock & roll.

Michael Rother's second solo album, follow-up to "Flammende Herzen", sounds like the second half of a double album.
Some critics have compared Rother's music of this period to early Oldfield music, but there are more differences in my opinion : there are no folk influences in sight (typical of classic Oldfield of the seventies)and the use of minimalist forms and electronica places Rother's style on the classic german school.
Rother's music is not so avant garde than say Neu or Cluster, but it is made with style avoiding the pigeon hole of easy listening (say New Age).

Often labelled as “Godfather of ambient” Michael Rother in the course of his musical career has experienced – and indeed he survived – quite a few attempts to quote him as “godparent” to numerous styles of modern electronic music.
So far Rother’s output has sold by a good 1 million units (his ‘77 solo debut “Flammende Herzen” even inspired German filmmaker Walter Bockmayer’s cult-movie of the same name) and is echoed in the late-nineties’ works of post-techno electronic artists such as Underworld and The Chemical Brothers.
On “Esperanza” all of Rother’s musical strengths were combined: those magic trance-beats and romantic yet “no cliché” melodies; a perfect combination of synthesized/sampled sounds and so-called “natural” musical instruments; those minimal loops, always feeling organic and therefore sounding like everything was played in real-time.

Rother is credited with a battery of instruments (guitar, piano, bass, vibraphone, Hawaiian guitar, synthesizer, strings) but it’s not the least bit muddled, fussy or overdone.
Here Rother plays echoed vibes as lightly-struck percussion resound over Rother’s backseat snatches of guitar melody that pick up where the vibes trail off, like gentle foreplay on a warm Mediterranean night.
This album stands alongside his work with NEU!, Harmonia and his “Zuckerzeit” associations as final proof of not only of his vast instrumental facility, but his keen ear for both melody and arrangement—which on this album are about as vast as the aural vistas he captures so perfectly.

THEY may have stopped short of laying beach towels on the stage, but German synth-art pioneers Michael Rother and Dieter Moebius did at least meet their country's stereotype for being very punctual.
From his early work with the pioneering Krautrock band Cluster to his later solo recordings, Dieter Moebius (Rother's long-term live accomplice) became known as one of the most innovative and prolific voices in contemporary electronic music, anticipating movements from ambient to techno years before the fact.
Despite the fact Moebius was sitting behind a bank of computers and Rother was meddling with innumerable electronic gadgets, the music on Saturday's gig was still very organic and a great deal more human than any number of guitar bands.
