Sarne sees an aspect of both the novel and film as: 'having a bit of fun about a man wanting to be a woman.
Michael Sarne is fired by one of several current projects, one he understands well from the world of his childhood.

  DVD Savant Review: Myra Breckinridge
One of Michael Sarne's few observations about the Gore Vidal source novel in his commentary is that Vidal placed a major sodomy scene at the climax of all his books.
All Sarne can contribute are flower-power movie clichés: cops busting the heads of hippies, a judge (William Hopper of 20 Million Miles to Earth) secretly smoking a joint, live sex being cheered in an "acting" workshop.
Michael Sarne says what she straps on is a set of six-guns, but we never see them...

Francis Coppola's One From the Heart (1982) and Michael Sarne's Myra Breckinridge (1970) probably don't have much in common except they each marked the end of their respective eras.
Regarding it as a big mistake, she nevertheless finds some moments of merit and occasionally is acerbic about the people and things she does not fondly remember.
Mike Sarne is wackily engaging, and seems to be watching a completely different film to the rest of us.

Sarne was quite uncomfortable with the gay material, and so he withdrew into English private school camp and arbitrary film clips meant to distract the audience from what was really going on.
Sarne points out that Reed wanted to be seen as straight ("De-Nile is not just a river in Egypt!" he quips on his track), and this leads to even more confusion.
Sarne sided with her in her disputes with Welch and Reed, and he rightly says that the movie would be a lot worse without her.

 Myra Breckinridge
Sarne's first feature film was mildly well received by critics enamored of the then burgeoning "new film" movement, so he probably seemed like a good bet for Frye's bid to turn the otherwise unfilmable Myra into boxoffice cash.
In short order Sarne was flown to Hollywood, given a $4 million budget (real money in those days) and told to have at it.
Thrown in at the deep end Sarne was quickly over his head and, most of the time, stoned out of his mind.

It is clear from Sarne's commentary that he idolized West; in her own commentary Welch flatly states that West had carte blanche to do what she wished, be it write her own lines or demand the inclusion of two musical numbers or not work before five in the afternoon.
It is true that director Sarne does have the occasional inspired idea--as in his use of film clips of everyone from Shirley Temple to Judy Garland to create counterpoint to the action--but by and large, whenever Sarne was presented with a choice of how to do something he seems to have made the wrong choice.
In addition to the Sarne and Welch commentaries and the making-of documentary, the DVD includes several trailers and two versions of the film: a "theatrical release" version and a "restored" version.

It turns out it was in Sarne's contract that Fox couldn't fire him until he gave them the first cut, "so he keeps cutting and cutting and cutting.

Both the director, Michael Sarne, and Welch have gone on the record with brand new screen-specific audio commentaries for the film.
Sarne continues to defend the poorly reviewed film, while Welch just lets loose on everyone -- especially Mae West, who, it is no secret, she utterly despised.
In addition to Sarne, Welch and Reed, the backstory also includes new interviews with David Brown and brash and brainy feminist author Camille Paglia.

Passing through the film's fractured narrative are any number of aging movie stars, including a haggard John Carradine as the surgeon who transforms Myron into Myra, Andy Devine as Cowboy Bill, and Mae West, who tips the whole endeavor hopelessly into camp whenever she appears as casting agent Leticia Van Allen.
As the reigning sex goddess of cinema in 1970, Sarne couldn't have picked a better actress with which to upend gender roles and god knows what else in Hollywood, but he's simply not up to her game performance.
No one is, which renders the film watchable only for Welch's myriad costume changes (the famous stars-and-stripes one-piece is still a stunner), and Sarne's occasionally amusing use of vintage film clips to comment on the ribald proceedings.

What follows is a dismal exercise in "weird hippie sh!t"™ that wants to follow the model of Russ Meyer’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, only without Meyer’s native talent and insane worldview.
Director Michael Sarne has some flair for composing the frame, but none for editing.
His favorite transition is the insertion of clips from old movies (which is a BAD idea in this case, since all of the old movies in question are MUCH better than Myra and throw Myra into stark contrast).

(A DD 2.0 stereo mix is likewise fulsome and satisfying.) The first commentary on side A of the flipper (that is, paired with the Special Edition) comes from director Michael Sarne, who seems certain that he's filmed a powerful Fellini-esque discursion on the nature of art and the place of the artist.
Also home to Welch's infamous description of West as a "dockworker in drag," the yakker is funny, but it can get tiring listening to Welch sigh deeply and wonder aloud for the umpteenth time what she was thinking accepting this part.
