Such expeditions attract international teams of experts who try to tackle the challenge of gathering exact qualitative and quantitative information on the identity, biology and ecology of organisms inhabiting an environment that is difficult to access.
The expedition followed in the tradition of that of the RV Michael Sars, which in 1910 conducted a similar four-month expedition crossing the Atlantic several times, using the newest technology of that time.
Modern research vessels, such as the RV Sars, are equipped for carrying out a multitude of tasks on the same cruise.

In the present memoir on the Physical Oceanography of the Norwegian Sea we have described the results of the Norwegian investigations made in this sea area, chiefly with the Michael Sars, during the five years of 1900 to 1904.
We think that these discoveries give us the right to hope that by continued investigations it will be possible to predict the character of climate, fisheries, and harvests, months or even years in advance.
The observations which we now publish have for the most part been collected during the cruises of the Michael Sars (The names of those who have taken the observations and collected the water-samples are mentioned in our Tables II and III.

In 1912, some forty odd years after the publication of 20,000 leagues Under The Sea, Sir Earnest Shackleton wrote in The Future of Exploration:
"...all the work of our modern oceanographers-- of Sir John Murray of Challenger fame, Dr. Hjort of the Michael Sars, Prince Albert of Monaco, and of the various marine biological stations-- has won less of public attention and interest than did a single one of Jules Verne's heroes, Captain Nemo of the Nautilus.
Thus does a good tale overshadow the romance of real life...."
