Saso has lived in China for more than 20 years, is fluent in Japanese and Chinese, and has a working knowledge of several of the minority languages.
Saso has a doctorate from Lodon University in Chinese Taoist Literature and in anthropology, a master's degree in philosophy, plus a master's from Yale University in Asian studies.
He is one of the few Westerners who hold membership in the Chinese Academy of Social Science, and he was the research editor for that Academy from 1990 to 1997.
