The efforts of Sir Walter Scott and others to identify him with the Sir Michael Scot of Balwearie, who in 1290 was sent on a special embassy to Norway, must be considered unsuccessful, though he may have been a member of the family.
Michael is said to have foretold (after the double-tongued manner of the ancient oracles) the place of Frederick's death, which took place in 1250.
He was supposed to have fore-told that he would end by a blow from a stone of not more than two ounces in weight, and that to protect himself he wore an iron helmet, and that, raising this in church at the elevation of the host, the fatal stone fell on him from the roof.

 Michael Scotus
The contention that he was an Irishman seems to be disposed of by the fact that when, in 1223, he was offered the Archbishopric of Cashel, he declined on the ground that he was ignorant of the Irish language.
In this case, however, it was the unwillingness of the local clergy and not that of the candidate himself that stood in the way of Michael's preferment.
The legend which grew up around the name of Michael Scot was due to his extraordinary reputation as a scholar and an adept in the secret arts.

Famous Scots - Michael Scott the Wizard
Michael Scott or Scot was an important philosopher at the Court of the Holy Roman Emperor, whose writings and translations were valued around Europe in the 13th century.
Michael studied the subject for many years but, to his credit, was somewhat dubious about its reliability, saying that there were too many variables.
Michael obviously deduced what was going on and commented afterwards that either Heaven had drawn further away from the earth - or somehow the tower had grown smaller.

Scot’s system of notation and correspondence appears on a divinatory device made by a Mosuli in the following century[4] and so, most fortunately, by reference to that device, we can ‘read’ Scot’s notae in astronomical terms.

Among the “English” students at Paris we may briefly mention Michael Scot, who, probably before 1209, learnt Arabic at Palermo, where he lived at the brilliant court of Frederick II, to whom he dedicated three of his earliest works.
Leaving Palermo for Toledo about 1209, he there completed a Latin rendering of two Arabic abstracts of Aristotle’s History of Animals.
