Always a writer first, and a teacher second, Michael continued to write short stories, but always he knew there was a larger work to be pursued.
Reflecting on an extraordinary experience with his family visiting the battlefield at Gettysburg, Michael became obsessed with telling the story of that momentous event through the eyes of the main characters themselves, something that had never been done.
And, rediscovering the manuscript of the baseball story in Michael's files, his son Jeff presented it again to the New York publishing community, and Carroll & Graf published it in 1991.

Michael Shaara won a Pulitzer Prize for the moving work that focuses on the one pivotal battle, the high-water mark of the War Between the States.
I say this because Michael Shaara was able to capture male friendship, male envy and competition, male humor (which can be dark, sarcastic, and gross) and the manner in which males respond to a chain of command.
Third, Shaara is superb at developing individual characters, exploring the internal dynamics that make them 'tick' and that lead them to take the actions and positions that they take under certain conditions, such as the stress of warfare.

His 1974 masterpiece was a rare event indeed, the almost-perfect marriage of an author's style, philosophy, subject matter and story line--a historical novel that remains immensely popular with both critics, reading public, and historians.

Jeff Shaara has already announced that he is now working on a sequel to his father's book, calling it now a "trilogy." Adequate words escape me to describe my feeling about this.

In the final section (Friday) Shaara breaks from his pattern (Union advantage, Confederate advantage, Union advantage, Union advantage) and tells of the Union victory.

The movie makes it seem as though the title refers to the Union Army or perhaps more specifically to the troops commanded by Col. Chamberlain in the 20th Maine, but I would love to find a statement specifically from the author on this point.
