For field archaeologists, the most significant of these was the introduction of the geophysical survey, enabling an advance picture to be built up of what lies beneath the soil, before excavation even commences.

Archaeologists are also very much reliant on public support, the question of exactly who they are doing their work for is often discussed.

Michael Shanks, of course, is one of the chief voices of the postprocessual archaeology which developed in the 80's in response to processual archaeology, the New Archaeology of the 60's.
Shanks traces the development of the notion of Hellenism from the 16th to the 18th century through the activities of collectors, antiquarians, and early travelers, and the writings of Winckelmann.
Shanks is convinced, though, that Classical archaeology is a rich field for the ongoing investigation of the relationship between the past and the present.

Archaeologists may object that there is a world of difference between attributing something to a time or place, and attributing it to an individual "hand." But if there is such a difference, it works to the connoisseur's favor.
Archaeologists may also object that their stylistic judgements derive from a painstaking correlation of "hard" excavation data, and therefore have an objectivity lacking in Beazley's attributions.
Positivist archaeologists and historians presuppose the validity of stylistic analysis because stylistic analysis provides them with all their evidence for past actions and events; it reassures them that they are, in fact, archaeologists and not just misguided geologists.

Archaeology is an approach to understanding lost cultures and the mute aspects of human history, without a cut-off date: in England, archaeologists have uncovered the long-lost layouts of medieval villages abandoned after the crises of the 14th century and the equally lost layouts of 17th century parterre gardens swept away by a change in fashion.
Given that typical digs will cause hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions of artifacts to be recovered and analyzed, and the cost and effort of reanalysing artifacts is prohibitive, the question on categorization and analysis techniques must effectively be posed prior to an excavation or survey starting.
Postprocessualism has become dominant in Europe, with some archaeologists speculating that the rise of postprocessualism there may be a direct result of anti-American sentiment.

Archaeologists, acknowledging that history is written by the winners, are now aware that archaeological research must shift from being conducted within a simple people-to-nature to a people-to-people perspective, as proposed Mazel (1989: 25) and, as a consequence, archaeologists must monitor the use of material culture to forge identities.
Archaeologists have been pointing out that "silent majorities" are reflected in the material record and that archaeologists must increasingly take into account the interests of native people and of ordinary people in general.
The archaeologists who work in this museum, nowadays the leading archaeological institution in the country, are thus in close contact with the educational implications of archaeology, although one must admit that sometimes there is still a lack of understanding between educators and archaeologists.

At the same time as promoting informed discourse, it might be argued that the discipline and its guardians can hinder it, excluding from the centre those who do not conform to the discipline's dictates ñ no matter how valuable a contribution they may have to make.
Classical Archaeologists (and Classicists and Archaeologists) have begun to look at the history and objectives of their discipline with a much more critical eye.

It is an object that existed in the past when it was the present and survived into the present, or my present.

It is surprising that archaeologists in their work often tend to reduce the contemporary meanings of (pre-)historic monuments to their mere informational value and neglect all other aspects of them.
For instance, one issue that archaeologists should monitor more closely are the emerging nationalisms all over Europe and the role archaeology actually plays in their legitimation, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
