The Baxter Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Michael Showalter is the tour de force who wrote, directed and stars as "the baxter," a term that refers to an ordinary nice guy who gets dumped—or goes completely unnoticed—by the woman of his dreams whenever a more interesting guy comes along.
Michael Ian Black from MTV's The State plays Elliot's neighbor and friend, and steals a few scenes just by parading around in his underwear, and Paul Rudd, from The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Clueless, delivers another laid back performance as an unwitting baxter-in-training.
Showalter, who also wrote the great idea/okay film Wet Hot American Summer and appeared on The Daily Show in the 1990s, has clearly taken a big step up with The Baxter, which is his baby from start to finish.

A few months ago Michael Showalter was sitting in a hotel room in San Francisco, where he was promoting his romantic comedy The Baxter, when he had the kind of career moment that befalls all first-time directors.
The critics gave the movie two thumbs down, noting that Showalter, who wrote, starred in, and directed the film, was miscast in the lead.
Both projects co-star Showalter’s longtime friends and collaborators Michael Ian Black and David Wain, and both projects share an old-fashioned sensibility that stands apart in today’s shock comedy culture.

The Baxter review (2005) Michael Showalter - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
Writer-director-star Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer) attempts to turn the romantic comedy formula on its ear with The Baxter, a film that tells the story from the point of view of the poor schlep that typical romantic comedies usually leave stranded at the altar, while the bride-to-be runs off with the handsome leading male.
In this film, that man happens to be Elliott (Showalter), a nerdy accountant that gets stranded at the beginning of this film by his beautiful fiancé, Caroline (Banks, The 40 year Old Virgin), for handsome and adventurous Bradley (Theroux, Duplex).
Showalter assembles a good cast of character actors to surround himself with, and he also keeps the tone light and amiable.

Premiere Magazine: The Baxter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
According to Michael Showalter (of the comedy troupe behind MTV's The State), guys like that are called "Baxters." There's a reason why they don't make movies about such characters, and that's precisely why Showalter and his Wet Hot American Summer buddies thought it might be funny to try.
In The Baxter, Showalter plays New York's most boring bachelor, Elliot Sherman, a stodgy tax accountant who lives by the motto, "Compromise is the key to success." Somehow, Elliott's managed to con the woman of his dreams (Elizabeth Banks) into marrying him, and the movie begins at the altar — with their breakup, of course.
Showalter might've had something if he'd cast Crispin Glover in the role, but instead he presents the character as a runaway sketch comedy routine.

The Baxter is Showalter's compromise between the wacky, intellectual humor he perfected in Wet Hot American Summer and Comedy Central's Stella and the old-fashioned romantic comedy of yesteryear.
Although Showalter tries to distance himself from the sketch comedy for which he is known, he can't help but stray from his feature film role once in a while.

Showalter, 35, came up with the moniker for the arrested-development archtype because he wanted it to sound universal.
What Showalter had in mind was a romantic comedy, showcasing his admiration for the screwball antics of '30s films, in which Baxters befriended not bedded the hot women and could only carry Cary Grant's walking stick, not his airs.

In other words, a "Baxter" — like accountant Elliot Sherman (writer-director Michael Showalter), whose idea of fun is backwards-pants day at work and who's been losing girlfriends to dashing old flames since his high-school prom.
Showalter throws believable obstacles in the path of true romance without forcing Cecil and Elliot to act like complete idiots, refrains from painting Caroline and Bradley as farcical grotesques and never holds a scene longer than it takes to make the point.
Williams pulls off the harder-than-it-looks feat of appearing plain and bedraggled one moment and radiantly lovely the next, and Showalter's Elliot is a surprisingly subtle creation, less than a fairy-tale prince but more than a consolation prize — at least for his own personal Ms.

 The Baxter - Movie Review
We’ve all seen the romantic comedy where the fair blonde heroine is in the church, at the altar and just about to marry the absolute wrong guy, when the right guy (handsome, charming, maybe a little unorthodox, but romantic as all hell) comes charging in and brings things to a screeching halt.
Michael Showalter’s promising, quite funny, but ultimately underwhelming The Baxter is the film about that guy, starting with that quintessential wedding moment and then flashing back to what led up to it.
A far better writer and at least moderately better director than he is comic actor, Showalter has a rather small bag of acting tricks, and they seem for the most part to involve looking vaguely constipated, in an uptight British sort of manner.
