Michael Somare was the son of Ludwig Somare Sana and Kambe Somare.
Ludwig Somare was a policeman from 1922 to 1947, rising to the rank of sergeant.
Somare himself was too young to be allowed to even see the kakars, but was included into the coming down ceremony as the interpreter for the photographer, who was of a suitable age to be attached to the next orob.

Grand Chief The Right Honourable Sir Michael Thomas Somare GCL GCMG CH PC (born 9 April 1936) was Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from independence in 1975 until 1980, from 1982 until 1985, and again since 2002.
Somare was Chief Minister, becoming Prime Minister when self-government was granted in 1973, and was a key figure in the preparations for subsequent independence in 1975 and the preparation and adoption of the Constitution.
Somare later served as foreign minister for a few months in 1999 and took this position again in July 2006.

Somare said, adding that he was aware that some people and organizations had expressed concerns about the Pacific Plan and had asked Pacific Island leaders not to adopt the Plan at this meeting.

Somare, 68, who led PNG to independence from Australia in 1975, named eight mostly young members of parliament to his cabinet.
Somare's National Alliance Party holds just 24 seats in the 109-member parliament, but his position was strengthened last week when the main opposition party led by the previous prime minister, Mekere Morata, decided to back the government.
Parliament resumes Thursday and in addition to the issue of Somare's grace period must tackle a controversial plan to deploy some 300 Australian police and civil servants in PNG to spearhead a major drive against rampant crime and corruption.

Canberra’s unprecedented ban on PNG ministerial visits follows the PNG government’s refusal to deport the Solomon Islands’ attorney-general Julian Moti, who was arrested in PNG on September 29 as he was en route from Singapore to the Solomons.
Moti’s lawyer has claimed that he was forced to leave the country by PNG soldiers, while Somare has denied any knowledge of the military’s alleged involvement.
Somare’s public statements opposing Moti’s extradition to Australia have been followed by Sogavare’s threat to expel Australian RAMSI personnel and replace them with forces from the UN or unnamed rival countries.

In the case of PNG in particular, Australians continue to underestimate - indeed, in many cases are entirely oblivious to - the lingering scars of our past colonial presence and our former doctrines of racial superiority.
It is easy to scoff and say that that was all a long while ago, but people such as Michael Somare grew up being required to address Europeans as "master" and were addressed by Europeans as "boy".
Far from being helpful to alternative voices in these countries who may want an end to the corruption and incompetence, it hurts them badly if they are identified as poodles of an Australia that can be branded as bullying and paternalistic.
