  math lessons - Michael Spivak
Michael David Spivak is a mathematician specializing in differential geometry, an expositor of mathematics, and the founder of Publish-or-Perish Press.
His unexcitingly and perhaps even misleadingly titled Calculus is not a mere calculus textbook - although it introduces calculus from first principles, it may be unsuitable for persons wishing to learn to apply calculus to scientific and engineering problems; it is primarily addressed to those who are attracted by the beauty of mathematics.
Spivak has also written Joy of Tex : A Gourmet Guide to Typesetting With the Ams-Tex Macro Package and The Hitchhiker's Guide to Calculus.

It is said that Michael Spivak now lives somewhere in Houston, Texas, for at least that's the address given for Publish or Perish, Inc, a firm he founded and has been using to promote mathematical education through the writing of textbooks.

Yellow Pig's Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Yellow Pig is believed to have originated with mathematicians Michael Spivak and David C. Kelly, while they were students at Princeton University in the early 1960s.
Michael Spivak has since written many famous math textbooks which contain yellow pigs.
Spivak's references to yellow pigs are not always direct; some textbooks contain references to Chinese policemen.

 Sue Thomas: Spivak
To adopt the spivak gender means to abjure the gendering of the body, to refuse to be cast as male, female, or transsexual.
Michael Spivak’s category for ambiguity offered the chance to do some interesting experimentation and so it was that his revolutionary approach to typesetting became adopted as a revolutionary approach to gender.
I asked him how the spivak gender came about, and somehow it came as no surprise that this unusual little identity was created as a snippet in order to test the system, but instead of being tidied up and recycled into the database it was left lying around for anyone to pick up.

books like apostol, spivak, and courant do not change as much as other books through different editions, because they were written right the first time, and the authors are not tempted to dumb them down to sell more the second time around.
spivak attended harvard as an undergraduate in the days when courant was the standard text, so he probably studied from courant.
Spivak's pedagogical style makes for a book that is great for learning and as a source of problems but is a reasonably lousy reference work.

 Calculus - Cambridge University Press
Spivak's celebrated textbook is widely held as one of the finest introductions to mathematical analysis.
His aim is to present calculus as the first real encounter with mathematics: it is the place to learn how logical reasoning combined with fundamental concepts can be developed into a rigorous mathematical theory rather than a bunch of tools and techniques learned by rote.
Since analysis is a subject students traditionally find difficult to grasp, Spivak provides leisurely explanations, a profusion of examples, a wide range of exercises and plenty of illustrations in an easy-going approach that enlightens difficult concepts and rewards effort.

Spivak's book is also a wonderful re-introduction to mathematics for those who've been away for a while.
But Spivak succeeds to do one very difficult thing, that is, to explain mathematics, all its beauty and all its harmony, to a reader that possibly never really understood it.
The difference between Courant and Spivak is that Courant is more worried about the applications of calculus, and Spivak is more worried about the essence of it (it doesn't make too big a difference, as both are, in a sense, the same thing told in two different ways).

Michael Spivak's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Calculus offers an interesting contrast with the book we discussed last month.
What Spivak gives us here is quite the opposite: the focus is on intuition and not on proof, and most ideas are introduced graphically before they are discussed more formally.
Spivak's book might serve to point out which ideas are really important.

Michael Spivak's books are good, as is Tom Apostol's Calculus.
Spivak is completely in the philosophy side; I only started reading it when I started taking multivariable calc (for physical sciences) in my second year of college (by then, I'd had pre-calc, Calc AB, and Discrete Math in High School, plus regular Calculus during my first year in college).
I love Spivak, but I think I was only able to appreciate him because of the situation I was in; this was effectively during my third consecutive year of calculus.
