Michael Tenzer (born 1957) is a composer, performer, educator and scholar.
Tenzer's compositions for chamber, solo and orchestral media have been performed in North America, Europe, and Asia, featuring performers such as Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri (tabla), Alex Klein (oboe) and Evan Ziporyn (clarinet).
In 1979, Tenzer co-founded the Sekar Jaya gamelan ensemble in Berkeley, California, an organization of Americans dedicated to the performance of Balinese arts that is now internationally known.

 Tenzer v. Superscope, Inc. (1985) 39 C3d 18
Tenzer was aware of other real estate opportunities for Amir, but he refrained from exploring such opportunities on Amir's behalf in reliance upon Tushinsky's promise that he would receive a finder's fee from the Superscope sale.
Tenzer maintains that the discussion involved only whether such fees would be approved for future transactions, and did not touch upon approval of the finder's fee arrangement he had already made with Tushinsky.
Tenzer is entitled to invoke the doctrine of estoppel to plead the statute of frauds.

JMM: The Journal of Music and Meaning - Edward Green   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Tenzer clearly feels Balinese music is illuminated by “dialectic” reasoning, and he asserts, in many passages, that the most fundamental dialectic in Balinese music, underlying all its technical particulars, concerns the relation of ngubeng and majalan [stability and activity].
Tenzer disagrees; he asserts that colotomic meter can only be conceived as a compound of regularity and irregularity, with the two rhythms intensifying and clarifying each other.
Tenzer makes further clear that for all its “revolutionary” musical character, kebyar, by holding fast to these fundamental (albeit contradictory) Balinese values, must be judged a continuation of the island’s culture rather than a rebuke to it.

Michael Tenzer, 47, who proudly holds a doctorate degree in music composition from the University of California, Berkeley, has been promoting Balinese music and the arts for over two decades now.
Tenzer said that he didn't have any particular bond with music until he turned 12 -- at which time he became caught up with jazz and ragtime music.
Like Tenzer, Maceda, who died last may at age 87, was a prominent figure in the field of ethnomusicology, and was named the National Artist of the Philippines in 1997.

Gamelan Gong Kebyar by Annette Sanger   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Michael Tenzer's tome on the Gamelan Gong Kebyar is a most timely and welcome contribution to the literature on Balinese music.
Interestingly, like McPhee, Tenzer is a composer of Western and Balinese-inspired works, and he suggests a 'generational continuity' between this book and McPhee's; however, the present work extends much further into the world of Western music theory and comparative analysis.
Tenzer concludes that much of the momentum and interest of Balinese music lies in contrasts between, for example, movement and stasis, continuity and disruption, symmetry and asymmetry, fixed and unfixed melodic elaboration, and cyclic and non-cyclic passages.

Sekar Jaya was the formative matrix, the crucible in which Wayne Vitale, Michael Tenzer and Evan Ziporyn were shaped, the forum of their debates, and the occasion of their self-questioning.
Michael Tenzer adopts a much more self-consciously innovative stance; he uses traditional Balinese instrumental idioms, but within those limitations he tries to write music as different from Balinese music as he can.
Tenzer regards Situ Banda and Banyuari as cousins, although in the latter piece he tried especially to reconcile the Western musical drama of organic development with the essentially cyclical substrate of Balinese gamelan.

Outside of actually going to visit the island, reading this book has got to be the next best thing, giving you a very palpable sense of gamelan's power and meaning in its native cultural climate.
In addition to the text, Tenzer adds a very helpful glossary of terms, as well as an index of recommended recordings, both of Balinese productions, and of those from the West.

A jury assessed $18 million against investors Gerald and Douglas Murphy and their publicly traded companies for civil fraud and conspiracy in the failure of a planned adult development in the Kingwood area.
Tenzer, of Los Angeles, envisioned a 376-unit residential complex for active adults, patterned after his other successful projects appealing to the emerging "empty nest" market.
Jurors ruled that the Murphys maliciously breached their duties to the other partners, who included Tenzer and limited partner Frank, a former U.S. Postmaster General, of Belvedere, Calif., and that ARI and ERLY willfully participated in that breach.

The disc closes with David Lang’s "Press Release," a quirky solo etude of syncopated octave skips fitted to a rock groove that, by the standards of the rest of this recording, sounds strangely conventional.
Evan Ziporyn pursues a dual career as a composer and a clarinet virtuoso, and as this superb solo disc demonstrates, each side informs the other to invigorating effect.
The repertoire is brilliant and varied, from David Lang's bumptious "Press Release" to Michael Tenzer's "Three Island Duos" -- both of which are tailor- made for Ziporyn's lithe, succulent and rhythmically charged style.

The orchestra began commissioning works in 1983 with David Frost's "A Little Street Music" and has commissioned mostly American works (all but one, in fact) leading to Michael Tenzer's 1996 composition "Sources of Current." In total, the orchestra has commissioned 48 works.
This many works in a slightly over a decade is a tremendous amount of commissions, especially for a freelance orchestra with a smaller annual operating budget.
